"We're having a culture war and Jesus happens to be one of the weapons tossed about by both sides." -- Amy-Jill Levine

Ever feel like Jesus has been kidnapped by the Christian Right and discarded by the Secular Left? “Saving Jesus” is a total revision of Living the Question's popular DVD-based small group exploration of a credible Jesus for the third millennium. Join Pastor Bills on Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m., beginning January 21, for this six-week progressive study. This is a continuation of what was offered last fall, but you may join anytime – and new people are encouraged to attend! Sign up on the Connection Card in Sunday's bulletin, on our Facebook event page, or on the sign-up sheet in the Gathering Space.

The Fourth Sunday Eat Out Group will meet Sunday, January 27 at 12:45 p.m. at Olive Garden (5015 Marsh Rd., Okemos). This month, we will be helping Laura Topping celebrate her 91st birthday (January 23)! To make a reservation, sign up on the Connection Card in Sunday's bulletin or contact Joyce Smith (517-339-0620) by January 25.

You are invited to bring your friends and a dish to pass on Wednesday, January 30 at 12:00 noon in the Copper Chimney Lounge. Susan Stinson, the UUMC choir director, will speak about her life and music. Staff members of UUMC and Wesley are invited to be our guests. Please sign up on the Connection Card in Sunday's bulletin if you will be coming and/or If you would like to help set up at 10:00 a.m. Questions? Contact Libby Cloud at 517-641-4296.

The Second Tuesday Book Group will be reading Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly for their meeting on Tuesday, February 12 at 1:00 p.m. This book is available at various local libraries and online at Amazon, Ebay, or Costco. Whether or not you can obtain and read the book, please join us for a lively discussion at 1:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month. New people are always welcome. Books have not been selected for future months, so please bring any suggestions you may have.

The Tuesday Bible Study group will not be meeting in January. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 12 from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. in the UUMC Conference Room. We will discuss selections from 1 and 2 Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy, and Titus. Each study is independent — previous attendance is not required. For more info, contact Jim Pocock at 517-333-8380.

We often take photographs and videos of adults, youth, and children as they participate in UUMC and Wesley services, events, and activities. These images may appear in digital and print communications designed to build congregational community and to promote our church and its activities. If you do not want your photo or your child’s photo to be used in communications, you must submit a written request to the church office (

Thank you so much for filling out the yellow Connection Card each week! This card has several purposes: (1) it allows you to see all the many ministries and ways you can serve our church, congregation, and neighbors, as well as opportunities to build your faith; (2) it provides an easy way to sign up for upcoming events; and (3) it allows us to track our church attendance. You’ll find the Connection Card in your Sunday bulletin and also at the Welcome/Connection Center (next to the coffee station). If you do not have any changes or additions to your contact information, just simply put your name on the card and place it in the collection basket! If you have questions or concerns, please contact the church office at 517-351-7030.

Representatives of Stephen Ministry will be present in the Library following worship each Sunday to pray with you for any personal concerns or to answer questions about Stephen Ministry. You will also find information in card pockets in the pews.

We have been tying quilts and donating them to organizations that assist the homeless for many years. From 2011 - 2017, volunteers have made 353 quilts, which have been delivered to Open Door Ministry, Haven House, and the Lansing City Rescue Mission. While there is still a great need for these quilts, we need more hands to help with the work of making them. The Monday afternoon group meets on the second and fourth Mondays of the month from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. in the Quilt Room in the church basement; the Wednesday evening group meets every third Wednesday of the month from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in the same room. Please consider joining this important ministry even if you aren't available every month. No experience is necessary. For more info, contact Emily Wolf (517-332-2774) or Susan Stahl (517-281-2213).

Betsy Bricker (248-520-1469) is the contact person for January. Thanks to Patty Puckett for being our contact in December. Helping Hands provides meals and transportation to members and friends of UUMC during a time of need.‚Äč
