About the TV, Radio and New Media Broadcasting Community

Welcome to the second newsletter about digital preservation for audiovisual collections, dedicated to broadcast radio, TV and new media. It’s an initiative from the Presto4U project, which reaches out to various communities struggling with preserving digitised and born-digital audiovisual collections. While the Presto4U Core expert group for broadcast is talking about Quality Control issues and travelling around the world to help colleagues digitse their collections, we bring you a small selection of preservation updates, requests and news on the Presto4U project.

We have set up a questionnaire about the current status-quo and existing needs for technological solutions that collections holders have. Filling it out takes approximately one hour, but we would appreciate if you could take the time to complete this questionnaire. It would help us to serve you and the community better and promote the needs and requirements that you have. Even if you would not be able to answer all 13 pages, or every single question, the fact of having your input helps us tremendously to concentrate on specific issues.

Feet On The Ground: A Practical Approach To The Cloud
When evaluating cloud storage providers, it is dangerous to assume such services are only storage and therefore uncomplicated or that requirements for storage are obvious and therefore inherently met by the service provider. Experience with any technology selection will prove the opposite. No two services are the same and the variance between services often represents the difference between successful implementation and a failed initiative. Never purchase a service without proper vetting; uninformed decisions risk loss of time, money, and even assets. These nine assessment criteria will help you get started in asking the right questions and making a practical, informed decision on using cloud storage for archival or preservation needs.
