Portugal - Euro Champions in Football and Early Stage Investment!
Dear Global Innovation, Entrepreneurial and Early Stage Investment Community,

With this edition of our EBAN Newsletter, we are delighted to congratulate Portugal on winning the Euro Football Championship 2016 AND we are delighted to announce their ground-breaking initiative to spur early-stage investing with their new Startup Portugal co-investment fund.  Portugal's FNABA Business Angel President Miguel Henriques invites all entrepreneurs and investors to check it out below!

In this edition, we also highlight Riku Asikainen, our EBAN Vice President who was recently a featured speaker at the Congress held by the EASME, the Executive Agency for SME's.

And we are always pleased to tell success stories from Greece which "celebrated" the first anniversary of capital controls, in an era of fears and skepticism about the consequences of the post Brexit global investment environment. As can be seen from below, the Greek entrepreneurial community is very resilient, no matter what the conditions are!

We are also particularly pleased to announce the Copernicus Accelerator with this edition of our newsletter.  As you know, EBAN has a strong relationship with ESA, the European Space Agency.  40 entrepreneurs will be selected to work on innovative ideas, based on Earth observation.  Make certain and apply by 25 July!

Finally, to all Francophiles around the world, Happy Bastille Day!

With kindest regards as always,
Candace Johnson

Startup Portugal launch!

Dear Investors and entrepreneurs around the world!
Considering the unique and important role that business angels have played in the Portuguese entrepreneurial ecosystem, the Portuguese Government recently launched a national strategy for entrepreneurship which targets investors and business angels, in particular.

This strategy, called Startup Portugal, encompasses a list of measures which reflect how strategic the Portuguese Government considers entrepreneurship to be for job creation and economical growth. It has three major concerns: to strengthen the startups that are being created, to foster and attract the best investment and to help the startups grow in the global market.

In terms of investment, I would like to tell you about a new co-investment fund for Business Angels of €26 million. This fund is one of the most competitive in Europe on how it benefits and rewards foreign investors. There are a number of factors that contribute to this:
i) An 80% upside after breakeven
ii) Fast and simple Business Angel accreditation process
iii) A Business Angel individual application is allowed
iv) The Government puts up 65% of each investment with a minimum amount of contribution of €300,000.00 and a maximum of €750,000.00 for each Fund
v) Covers Fund management expenses up to 3% of the total Fund value

Beside the new co-investment funds for Business Angels and Venture Capital, the Portuguese strategy for entrepreneurship includes other measures that also benefit foreign investors, such as the Seed Program (similar to the English SEIS), which allows the non-taxation of capital gains and its deduction in personal income tax.

Applications are currently open until the 19th July. In November, during the Web Summit in Lisbon, there will be a new fund and a new call for applications.

In annex we enclose the respective Call for Tenders and you can find all further information in:

If you would like to consider an application, either individually or together with other business angels, the Portuguese Business Angel Federation (FNABA) is prepared to assist you through the application process and provide all clarifications needed.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Warm Regards,

Miguel Henriques
