ESOF 2016 - EuroScience Open Forum Attracts the World’s Leading Scientists, Researchers, Inventors, Policy-makers, and Investors to Manchester

Dear Global Innovation, Entrepreneurial and Early Stage Investor Community,

It was EBAN’s great honor to actively participate in and be a member of the Steering Committee for  ESOF 2016 - the Euro Science Open Forum, which took place in Manchester 24-27 July.

This global forum which brought together scientists, researchers, inventors, policy makers and investors from around the world was the perfect place to learn about the importance of Open Data and Open Science — two of the hot topics of the conference. It was also a place to meet 4 (yes, four) Nobel Laureates.  Wow!

EU Commissioner Carlos Moedas gave a stirring speech about the need or private investors to invest in science and technology in Europe.

For the last two years, EBAN has made a conscious effort to engage with science and technology as we feel that business angels in particular can help scientists and researchers turn their inventions into market innovations through mentoring, coaching,  networking and (a bit more) patient capital.

As a result, we have been very pleased to enter into partnerships with the European Research Council (ERC), European Space Agency (ESA) and to feature ERC proof of concept grantees and ESA BIC laureats at our flagship events as well as to coach, mentor and invest in them.  Our Space Manifesto, is just another one of the results of our cooperation.

Thanks to our Science Business partnership with Managing Director Richard Hudson, I was asked to speak at ESOF with venture capitalist Hermann Hauser (Amadeus Venture Capital) and Syngenta Corporate Venture Fund director, Michael Lee, on "Three Kinds of Money:  Business Angel vs Venture Capital vs Corporate Finance".  It was a great panel as it really showed scientists and researchers how these three members of the Venture Finance Eco-system can come together at each stage of the innovation chain to help them.

We were also very pleased to see Sherry Coutu, featured at ESOF to speak about all the wonderful work Scale-Up Institute UK is doing with scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs and investors.  EBAN has entered into a partnership with Scale-Up Institute UK and we are particularly thrilled about working with them to solve the "Missing Link" situation in Europe, that of engaging corporations with start-ups and scale-ups through our e-Xcelerator committee.

Elsewhere in the news, we at EBAN were delighted to attend our Ukraine Angels Conference in Kiev this last week.  EBAN President Emeritus Paulo Andrez was the guest speaker and he and Ana Barjasic, our EU Projects Director could attest to the growing dynamic of the business angel community in Ukraine (see below).

Please enjoy the rest of the articles in this last EBAN weekly newsletter before our wonderful EBAN Team takes a well deserved vacation during the month of August.

With kindest regards as always,

Candace Johnson

Impact Investing - Going from Interested to Doing
Investors of all kinds are increasingly interested in the opportunities offered to invest in line with social and environmental values and outcomes in mind. But all too often there is a disconnect between interest in impact investing and getting to a first deal. This is often due to a fear of “getting it wrong” or struggling to incorporate a third key metric—impact—along the risk and reward axis. This webinar will offer practical advice regarding how to assemble a “quick and dirty” strategy to take the first concrete steps as an impact investor which can then serve as the basis for a long-term approach.

The webinar's agenda will be:
- Introduction of new members
- Implementing an Impact Investment Strategy (presentation by Ryan Little from Impact HUB, previously from BMW Foundation)
- Social Entrepreneur case study
- Community input
Host: Martijn Blom, Vice Chair of EBAN Impact Investing Committee and Founder of Droomzaken
