From Me To You

Paradise, AKA Las Vegas

This month, I will be visiting Las Vegas, one of my favorite cities in this country, again.

I cannot count how many times I’ve traveled there, both for business and for vacation. To me, there is something very libertarian about that town and about the state of Nevada. Perhaps it’s the availability to do nearly anything at any hour of the day or night.

There is also the awesome history about Paradise, an unincorporated area of Clark County, that is home to most of the famous Las Vegas Strip. It also happens to be, as this video notes, a “city-sized tax dodge,” specifically fighting annexation by the city of Las Vegas to prevent an increase in their tax liability in the 1950s, while remaining the main attraction in the Nevada desert.

How cool is that?

As if I need an excuse to go to Vegas...

Earlier this year, I accepted an invitation to speak at LPEX, the Libertarian Political Expo, a major non-partisan conference created to connect people, organizations, technology and ideas, providing vital leadership training in the form of workshops, panelists and speakers. In other words, this event is an ideal place to find The Advocates for Self-Government.

This is the first year of what promises to be an exciting annual event, and they chose to kick things off with quite an offering of training by some of the most respected organizations in the country. The Leadership Institute and American Majority offer some of the best activism training in the political world, and they tailored their training presentations for the hundreds of libertarians expected to attend.

I invite you to join me at the end of this month in Paradise, as we identify and equip the newest leaders in the libertarian movement.

The Liberator Online is here to build a stronger movement for liberty. We do this by providing information about the libertarian movement and how to best communicate the ideas of liberty. Thank you for being a part of this!

New Poll Shows Libertarians Represent One-Fifth of Voters

In August, The New York Times ran a piece proclaiming that the United States’ political landscape was in the in the midst of a “libertarian moment.” The narrative may have focused some on Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and his strong libertarian leanings, but the story told was much deeper and, perhaps, a sign of a generational shift in American politics.

Still, some view the “libertarian moment” as a blip on radar. Old narratives, such as the stale left-right political paradigm, are repeated on television and talk radio shows by the pundit class, who are ignorant to changing attitudes and growing discontent with increasingly irrelevant political institution.

End The PATRIOT Act Now

Last week, the a panel of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the National Security Agency’s bulk phone metadata collection program is not authorized by Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act. The ruling is a setback for congressional leaders who are trying to reauthorize the provision before it expires at the end of the month.

Domestic SurveillanceA lower court deferred to the Obama administration, upholding the legal basis for the domestic surveillance program, but the three-judge appellant panel reversed the decision, setting the stage for the case to go before the Supreme Court.

Bits and Bytes From Across the Spectrum

STRENGTHEN, DON'T WEAKEN THE RELEVANCE STANDARD: "H.R. 2048 falls woefully short of reining in the mass collection of Americans’ data, and it takes us a step in the wrong direction by specifically authorizing such collection in violation of the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. Americans, and members of Congress, should demand that Congress instead pass the original, bipartisan version of the USA FREEDOM Act from 2013, which strengthened—not weakened—Section 215’s relevance standard to end bulk collection, while still allowing the government the flexibility it needs to pursue genuine threats against the United States." — Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI), in a press release from his Congressional office, May 13, 2015.

WHO CREATED WHAT NOW?: "Your brother created ISIS... Why are you saying that ISIS was created by us not having a presence in the Middle East when it’s pointless wars where we send young American men to die for the idea of American exceptionalism? Why are you spouting nationalist rhetoric to get us involved in more wars?" â€” Ivy Zeidrichpolitical science major & College Democrat at the University of Nevada to Presidential candidate Jeb Bush at a Reno campaign stop, May 13, 2015

ANYBODY CAN BE SUCCESSFUL IN AMERICA: "This is a country where I was a really, really sick kid, and I grew up and I became really, really successful, and I think my kids can do it to. This is a country where if you try really hard, anybody can do anything." — Rick Harrisonstar of reality TV series "Pawn Stars," May 14, 2015

ANOTHER STAND WITH RAND MOMENT IN THE SENATE?: "We will be filibustering. We will be trying to stop it. We are not going to let them run over us. And we are going to demand amendments and we are going to make sure the American people know that some of us at least are opposed to unlawful searches."  â€” Senator Rand Paul, on behalf of the three-judge panel deciding ACLU v. Clapper, May 7, 2015.

Most Effective Outreach? Lead By Example

I’m often asked what I find to be the most effective ways to share libertarian ideas.

Lead by ExampleMy answer? Lead by example.

Don’t worry about word choice, which book to recommend, or how you will answer a tough question. Start by being a shining example of what a libertarian is.

When you live your life in a way that exemplifies your beliefs, your actions display to others what you believe. This means getting involved in your community, volunteering for charity activities, and networking. What does it say to you when someone constantly talks about gardening should be, but you never see their tomatoes or roses? Is your mind questioning those supposed skills? The same goes for libertarian ideas. If you talk ALL DAY LONG about the wonders of free markets, voluntary cooperation, and how private charity outperforms government welfare programs in every way, but if no one sees you “gardening,” how much weight do your words carry?
