Navigating Curricular Resources


Highlighting some key resources for your success:
By now you should have received an email with instructions about how to access your new Blackboard and email accounts. Your Icahn email address is the primary method of communication that the administration will use to get in touch with you—so get in the habit of checking this regularly so you don’t miss important reminders, announcements and invitations to events! You will also be receiving an email from your advisor the week of August 4, so keep your eyes posted for this communication.

Once you have successfully accessed your computer and email accounts, you should take some time to explore Blackboard (Bb) - https://learn.mssm.edu. Bb is Icahn’s online learning platform, where you will view all your course details: lecture notes and recordings, announcements, assignments and grades. You will get access to each course one week before the course starts.  If you are having any problems accessing Bb, contact the School Help Desk at 212-241-7091 or email ASCIT@mssm.edu and ask to have your password reset.  Aside from course details, other areas of Bb you should become familiar with are:
  • Bb > My Orgs > Class of 2018-MD: Here you will find the Year 1 calendar, the list of required and recommended course books, list of required equipment, and lecture recordings. Quick links to class information (class composite and profile book) are forthcoming. And as the year progresses, you will also find recordings and slides from events and class meetings, and class announcements.
     
  • Bb > Student Resources: Here you will find general resources important during your time at Icahn, including 'Policies and Procedures' from the Icahn Student Handbook, Career Planning Services, Learning Resources, Compliance and much more. 
Required and Recommended Course Books:
The following list specifies which books are required and which are suggested, as well as if they are available online or at the library: http://libguides.mssm.edu/reserves.

If books are not available through the library, they are available for purchase at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Posman Bookstore. You will be automatically added to the books@mssm.edu listserv, which students use to notify each other if they are selling their books. 

Required Equipment:
The medical school strong recommends that each student obtain their own medical tools and equipment. The list is posted on the FAQ page of the enrollment website. Supplies are available for purchase at the Posman Bookstore. Please note this list has been updated.

Locker Assignments:
During pre-enrollment you will gain access to lockers, located on the 12th floor of the Annenberg building.
 
Systems Biomedicine
 
The Molecular Cellular and Genomics Foundations course (MCG) is a first-semester course that brings entering medical students up to speed on basic Biochemistry and Cell & Molecular Biology. Students with advanced standing in these areas may wish to take, instead of MCG, the Systems Biomedicine course, which was described in more detail in the Introduction to Curricular Affairs communication that went out on July 11. Systems Biomedicine covers similar areas as in MCG (with the notable exception of nitrogen metabolism), but treats the subject matter more quantitatively. Students who try Systems Biomedicine will have the option to switch back to MCG, until the first Systems Biomedicine exam.  Students taking the Systems Biomedicine option will have this noted on their medical school transcript.
Orientation Schedule
 
The orientation guide has been posted to the enrollment website for your reference. It takes you through the events day by day, as well as lists out the special events the orientation committee has been working hard to plan for you. 

Make sure to RSVP for the Friday night social event by August 10th. The orientation committee will post the pre-enrollment activities on the Facebook page.

Additionally, be sure to use the time before you arrive at Icahn to check that you have submitted all your documents and completed all the tasks that are required of you. You can refer back to the previous communications posted on the enrollment website.
