The members of United Academics believe we must protect the critical role of faculty in university governance. We must preserve and protect shared governance at UO in these two ways:
1) Protect the University Senate’s role in governing our university by enshrining shared governance in the Collective Bargaining Agreement per Senate Resolution US12/13-26, Regarding Shared Governance at the University of Oregon
2) Ensure representation and voting rights for Students, Staff, and Faculty on the new independent board.
Send a message to President Gottfredson, Governor Kitzhaber, and our elected representatives in Salem and let them know that shared governance is a priority.
They need to hear from you. To date, faculty who have expressed concern over the future of shared governance at UO have been publicly dismissed by President Gottfredson, and rebuffed at the union negotiating table. For example, when approximately 100 faculty and staff gathered this past Tuesday, May 14 for an opportunity to hear from President Gottfredson on the status of institutional board legislation, he shocked and dismayed many faculty with his lack of respect for preserving shared governance in relation to independent boards and our faculty union contract. At the negotiating table, President Gottfredson’s chief spokesperson has admitted that the UO constitution itself in not enforceable, and could be overturned by a new independent governing board.
If there is to be an independent board, it must have faculty, students, and staff with full voting rights, and shared governance must be protected under our faculty union contract.
Send your message to President Gottfredson, Governor Kitzhaber, and our elected representatives in Salem now.
