Announcing YEM and Rootstock!
We're thrilled to announce two exciting New Roots programs happening in the 2nd half of the school year. YEM (Youth Entrepreneurship) is progressing into our third year in the community, and our new Rootstock: Youth Music Celebration is launching our inaugural year with our friends at GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance. More info on both programs below. Please help us spread the word about YEM and Rootstock by sharing this note, and/or sharing our social media updates. Likewise, we're hosting our 3rd and final open house of the school year on March 10th from 2-3p. Please invite family and friends to join us to help continue to grow our thriving school community. Last but not least, please read to the bottom of this newsletter to see key dates scheduled for the next couple months, including an invitation to attend our next Family Action Committee (FAC) meeting next Tuesday (3/5) in our lobby.

With excitement,

Michael Mazza

New Roots Charter School
Growing Students for a Just and Sustainable Future

The New Roots Vision

New Roots Charter School will empower young people as citizens and entrepreneurs that create just, democratic communities, and thriving green economies that restore the natural world that sustains us. Excelling in both traditional and innovative curriculum areas, our students will learn actively, think critically, and solve problems creatively and collaboratively, developing the knowledge and skills to redesign our communities for social, economic, and ecological sustainability. We will support all students in defining and realizing their goals and aspirations, and in recognizing their ability to take leadership in improving the lives of their families and community. We will put the best available tools—and the power of informed optimism—in the hands of tomorrow’s leaders.
Entrepreneurship Empowerment with YEM
Over the last two years, YEM (Youth Entrepreneurship Market) has been empowering over 100 of our region's young aspiring entrepreneurs in grades 4 through 12. All New Roots students are invited to register today to join the 2019 program starting March 16th, and they receive a pre-approved scholarship to the program.

Students who participate get to explore entrepreneurship with superstar local entrepreneurs from Emmy's OrganicsFirelight CampsLively Run DairyDSP ShowsNikki GreenGrainfulErica Marx CoachingWaffle FrolicThe Metal SmitheryClay School IthacaSpirit and KitschOne Ring Donuts, & more... Students also get to create and vend in cool places like Rev: Ithaca Startup WorksCornell eHubSouth Hill Business Campus, Press Bay Alley, & Ithaca Farmers Market

The program consists of 4 workshops (3/16, 3/30, 4/13, & 5/4) and 4 markets (5/18, 6/27, 7/25, 8/29). During the workshops, students work with coaches and local entrepreneurs to develop a business idea, build a business plan, build a budget, and develop a marketing strategy to prepare for the youth market on May 18th at Rootstock. The other three markets are part of the Thursday Night Farmer’s Market at Steamboat Landing, where students get to vend alongside other farmer’s market vendors.

YEM was co-founded at New Roots in 2017 by Michael Mazza & Ethan Ash, with support from a grant from the owners of Purity Ice Cream & Community Foundation of Tompkins County. Please share this message with family and friends to invite youth in grades 4-12 to sign up for the 2019 program at YEM (Youth Entrepreneurship Market). Thanks for your support!
