Dear New Roots Families,
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! We’re excited to begin our tenth year, the second of our new five-year charter term. Our teachers are back at school and preparing to make this our best year yet!
We hope to see you here at the Clinton House on Thursday, August 30 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. for our Open House Family Orientation event. In the meantime, here are a few previews:
The first day of school for all students will be Wednesday, September 5, 2018. We will spend the first three days on interdisciplinary projects and fieldwork to support your student’s orientation to our school’s academic expectations and culture. Please advise your student to dress appropriately and to bring a water bottle.
Our academic calendar and updated Student Handbook are posted and available for download in the Student and Family Resources section of our website at newrootsschool.org. Please call us if you would like to receive a hard copy, or plan to pick one up at the Open House.
Your student’s schedule for the new school year is based on graduation requirements and your student’s elective preferences. It will be available for review at our Open House on August 30. Please reach out to Matt O’Brien, Academic Adviser, if you have any questions about your student’s schedule. You can reach him over the phone at 607-882-9220 ext. 106 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Having basic school supplies such as a notebook, writing implements, and folders on hand will be helpful for the first days of school. Teachers will review any additional needs specific to their course, so there’s no need to purchase more than the basics to start.
All students will be issued a Chromebook for the 2018-2019 school year that they will be able to take home as needed. We will ask you to sign and return a document to acknowledge receipt of our school’s policy for the care and responsibility for Chromebooks, a task that you can complete at the Open House if you would like. Please watch for more information.
Remember, New Roots offers FREE Farm to School meals to ALL students! No need to budget for lunches, worry about your student missing the morning meal, or remember to replenish your lunch account. All we ask is that you encourage your student to EAT the great “healthy teen comfort food” served up by our amazing Farm to School team . . . and return the National School Lunch Program Eligibility Form. This information helps us to document that we qualify for grants and other programs that benefit the school, such as the federal e-rate funding that pays for our wireless service. For more details about our lunch program, please read a Letter from our Farm to School Coordinator.
Each month you will receive an email newsletter “Newts News” with important upcoming dates. To start the school year, we have a few dates to add to your calendar:
September 7th - New Roots students will be performing with a steel drum band at the inauguration of TC3’s new President, Orinthia T. Montague, Ph.D.
September 17th - Portrait Day
October 9th - Curriculum Night
October 25th - Portrait Day (make-up)
If you know families who have expressed interest in New Roots, now is the time to encourage them to enroll for 18-19! We have only a few seats left, and based on past enrollment trends anticipate a waiting list for some grades by September. Every student brings greater resources into our school community, so increased enrollment will expand the opportunities your student has in the new school year. Thanks in advance for your help spreading the good word!
Help save trees by completing our digital Communications Preference Survey, so we can communicate with you effectively throughout the school year. We’ll send you more information about what you can look forward to in the year ahead. It promises to be our best yet!
