Summer Ministry Hasn't Stopped!

“I really wasn’t excited about CYIATM training this year because it wasn’t at camp, but it ended up being an amazing two weeks as always!” – A returning summer missionary

Like so many other things in our world right now, summer ministry looks a little different these days!

Christian Youth in Action® (CYIA) is a huge part of CEF®s ministry this time of year. Traditionally, young people and staff from across the state gather for two weeks to train summer missionaries to teach 5-Day Club® in their local areas. Due to social distancing guidelines, CYIA was mostly conducted live online this year.

We were very blessed by the hospitality of a local church which made it possible for eight of our Southeast summer missionaries and six staff members to gather together in person.

Our students participated in video classes at the same time as other students from across the state, worked on learning and presenting different parts of the summer curriculum, enjoyed fun fellowship together, and spent time in God’s Word and worship. We have a wonderful group of summer missionaries this year, and it was exciting to see them work hard, grow, and build close relationships with each other.

During the second week of training, the summer missionaries taught their first Summer Good News Club® (formerly known as 5-Day Club). One team was able to teach a socially-distanced club in person. They reached 14 children, including two teenage boys who asked many deep questions. The other teams taught online clubs live over Zoom. In Southeast Wisconsin, six children heard the Gospel through online clubs. One little boy really didn’t want to be at club at first and would not participate. By the end of the week, he was participating enthusiastically and even memorized one of the verses! Our team was encouraged to see how God worked at these unique clubs.

In total, 29 students were trained statewide, and 69 children were reached at seven Summer Good News Clubs.

CYIA was amazing! But it was just the beginning. Throughout July and August, we have six weeks of Summer Good News Club meeting both online and in person. Please join us in praying that many children will participate in clubs and that God will work through the teaching to change many lives!

From Student to Teacher

“And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2)

Nearly all of the students who are serving as summer missionaries in Southeast Wisconsin this year attended 5-Day Club or Good News Club as children. Having been discipled by CEF missionaries themselves, they are now continuing the work by discipling other children.

One of these students is Jason Yager. He began attending the College Park Good News Club back in 2010 when he was just seven years old. When he finished elementary school, he attended the JYC
TM club at Greendale Middle School and also participated in CEF’s “Leader in Training” program, coming back to Good News Club as a helper. He continues to serve in his local Good News Club each school year. Last summer, he attended CYIA for the first time and he’s serving again this summer...his tenth year with CEF, first as a student and now as a teacher!

Jason shares:

“I am choosing to be a summer missionary again this year because I had so much fun last year! My favorite part of last summer was sharing the Gospel with two little boys and seeing them get saved. I also loved watching kids come back every day excited to learn more about Jesus. Camp taught me the importance of sharing the Gospel. I believe God is calling me to tell kids about Jesus, especially in these challenging times. I know this is a great way to spend my time and I look forward to seeing what God will do!”

Open Doors Online

For many years, CEF of Southeast Wisconsin has offered the opportunity for Good News Club teams to hold a one-week club after summer school. Although these outreaches are a proven method to reach new children and re-connect with Good News Club students over summer break, it is often challenging to find enough volunteers and secure space at the school. In 2019, only three of our Good News Clubs held a summer club. This year, with summer school occurring online, a total of eight Good News Club teams have stepped up to host online clubs, which will reach children from at least ten different schools!

Looking Forward

Although summer ministry is in full swing, we’re already looking ahead to the fall and re-starting our after-school Good News Clubs. As school districts plan and strategize methods for implementing social distancing in the new school year, we’re putting plans in place to continue reaching children in a variety of ways, including both online and face-to-face. We’ve also connected with three churches who are considering launching new Good News Clubs this school year in Addison, Glendale, and Lake Mills. In these uncertain times, we are still committed to bringing God’s Word to the children of Southeast Wisconsin.
