Events this weekend will shock you, make you think and make you laugh.

Music

Belcea Quartet

The ensemble breaks traditional boundaries in interpretations of classical and modern-day compositions, “seizing the music’s energy, shocking us out of our seats with every fortissimo," writes the Guardian. Thursday, October 20, at Mahaney Center for the Arts, Middlebury College.

Comedy

Mike Birbiglia

The comedian's 2016 feature film, Don’t Think Twice, hit big screens across the country this summer, and the New York Times has lauded his current routine as “so funny and yet so smart." Click here to read an interview with Birbiglia on our Live Culture blog. Sunday, October 23, at Flynn MainStage in Burlington.

"My friends turned me on to Joseph during a recent road trip. I decided they sound like a cross between Wilson Phillips and First Aid Kit. Can't wait to see them live." — Don Eggert (Associate Publisher, Creative Director)

Theater

American Hero

Presented by Vermont Stage, Bess Wohl's comedy about minimum-wage sandwich makers comes right to the edge of diatribe but steers clear of heavy moralizing. The actors easily earn the laughs and make a nice bid for empathy, giving us a window into life at the short end of the economic stick. Thursday through Sunday, October 20 through 23, at FlynnSpace in Burlington.

I'm Asexual, and People Just Don't Get It

Dear Athena: I am asexual, but most of my friends and some of my family members just don't get it. They can't understand how that would be real....

Personal of the week

Man seeking woman. Please don’t be put off by someone from across the lake. I visit friends in Burlington and Waterbury regularly, so driving to Vermont for the right person would be a pleasure.
I have a wonderful family, great friends, good health, a home on a quiet road with a river in the backyard — really, a pretty nice life. What I would like to add is the companionship of a good woman.
