President's Message

As I write this I am shivering in the cold of Washington D.C.  Four members of our Polk league are here on the Florida LWV league tour.  We had a speaker on the budget and public policy, toured LWV US and met with Jessica Jones advocacy; we are going to the Capitol, Supreme Court, and a trip by Florida House for some OJ.  It is great learning with local members across the state.
Another opportunity awaits with the 2013 Legislative Summit at the convention in Tallahassee from April 10 to 14.  Let me hear from you at 644-8527 if you are planning on attending.
League membership is three pronged—national, state and local.  Locally we are so pleased that Deirdre Macnab president of LWV Florida is the guest speaker for our annual meeting and luncheon on April 24th at the Lakeland Yacht and Country Club. I am looking forward to seeing all of our members and friends.

 In League,
Mary Jo

Membership Report
As of February 28, 2013 we have 74 members. This is an increase of 14 members (23%) from this time last year!   Please welcome our newest members, who joined in February: Jennifer Dees, Lisa Riener and John Welton.

Treasurer’s Report
As of Feb. 28th, it is 11 months through our fiscal year that ends March 31, 2013. Our income of $6,319.74 is about what we expected ($6,460).  Expenses were budgeted at $6,460, but are currently just at $4,180.56. However, we still have one quarter of dues to pay to LWV of Florida, some expenses for our President’s trip to the LWV of FL legislative session and some other administrative expenses. Members have donated some postage and supplies this year, so costs were less than projected. It is anticipated that our net income for this fiscal year will be over $1,000.  Our checking account balance is $8,860.62. Our accrual balance that is held with the LWV Educational Accrual fund is $690.44.

Proposed Budget 2013-2014
The Board has approved a proposed budget of $7,689 for the fiscal year 2013-2014. This budget will be presented for approval at our annual meeting on April 24, 2013.  There are a few things that account for this increase.
  • As we increase our membership, our dues to National and State increase accordingly.
  • The 2013 annual meeting will be held in April and the 2014 annual meeting will be held in March 2014 to move it back to the end of our fiscal year. This is being done so election of our new officers and directors occurs before the end of the fiscal year. This means the annual meeting income and expense is doubled for this year, and will drop back to one meeting the following year.
  • Currently, only the President gets reimbursed for the registration fee for the LWV of Florida Legislative session. The proposed budget is for four people. Members will be able to apply for registration reimbursement.

Earth Day Activity

The Peace River Drainage & Polk County Water Issues
The Unitarian Universalist Congregation's "UU Campus" series will offer a class on the above on Saturday April 20, 2013 from 1pm to 4pm.  Registration opens at 12:30pm and all classes are open to the public for a sliding scale donation of $5 to $25. Light refreshments are included.
Come honor Earth Day by learning more about local water issues.  Water issues examined will include: local water quality, the history of Polk County water and lakes, and the future of our water.
Panelists will include local water activist Karen Landers, a 12 year participant in the Polk County Water School; Lisa Riener, former federal Environmental Protection Manager and Tribal Nations educator, and current Polk State College Adjunct Faculty Member, and other local environmental educators.

Nancy Simmons spoke to the Polk County School Board on February 19 with some suggestions on improving the Board's Policy Committee.  Several LWV Polk members were in attendance to show their support.  Top - Superintendent John Stewart with Nancy.

Conference on Human Trafficking

Members of the League might be interested in this Conference on March 30th at Florida Southern College.  The official flyer is below and the conference is free.  The only thing we request is an RSVP, so that we may plan accordingly.

If people are just interested in visiting the Modern-day Slavery Museum at the college, they are welcome to do that.  It will be there all day.
