President's Message

The year is fast coming to an end. We have had many accomplishments this year. I would like to thank all League members who helped make this election year so successful.

We have a busy year coming up with many issues before us.The state league is partnering with other organizations to promote "Restoration of Rights" for felons.  This will be in the form of a constitutional amendment on the 2016 ballot. You will see more soon about collecting signatures to get it on the ballot.

We are also lobbying the state legislature to provide health care to all Floridians through expansion of medicaid or by some other option. We will also continue to monitor the legislature in implementing the rules of the Land and Legacy amendment that the league helped to pass.

I am pleased to announce our newest board member, Debra Wright, who brings us an abundance of expertise on a variety of subjects, especially education.

Hope to see many of you Thursday at the holiday party.

Sue Schultz, President

Report on Canvassing Board

On November 9, Ann Weeks observed the canvassing board’s review of Provisional Ballots.

There were 202 Provisional Ballots reviewed by the board.  The review recommended acceptance of 56 ballots.  Reasons for not accepting:
  • Administrative error:  Administrative error occurred in the precinct.
  • Voter in the wrong precinct:  A provisional ballot does not allow you to vote in the wrong precinct.
  • Double votes:  You can only black in ONE oval.
  • Voter is out of the county:  Make sure you have changed your address.
  • Voter not registered in time:   Florida does not have same day registration.  You must be registered twenty nine (29) days before the election.

The questions of the day:
  1. The Supervisor of Elections employs how many year-round full-time employees?              22     52     75   100    123
  2. During an election, the Supervisor’s office hires how many temporary employees?        500   1000   1200    1500   2000
(See answers below.)
 Legislative Summit March 10-12, 2015!

Put the Legislative Summit on your calendar

The League of Women Voters of Florida's annual Legislative Summit is scheduled for March 10-12 in Tallahassee.  The Summit brings members from all over the state to Tallahassee to advocate on our issues before state leaders, ensuring that a strong and united League voice is heard.

Previously dubbed Legislative Seminar, this three-day conference during legislative session has in the past included seminars and trainings on understanding League positions and advocating with civility;  briefings with legislative leaders in the Cabinet room of the Florida Capitol; lobbying legislators in person; members-only formal luncheons and dinners; and fundraising galas with Florida leaders.
Membership, Leadership Development
Team Message to LWVPolk Members

Starting a New Year is A good time of year to Reflect on League Membership.  The Membership Leadership Development Team would like to ask you to share your League Story.

What is your favorite part of being a League member, your favorite activity as a League member, what did you have the best 'AHA' moment from something you did or accomplished through League.

League means something to all of us....there is a special reason that we joined League and a special reason that we continue our membership.

The MLD Team is inviting you to share your story with us!!  It doesn't have to be long - a few paragraphs - just send it to any of the MLD Team:   Connie Prince, Jerry Weeks, Sue Schultz or Mary Jo Jarrett.  We are going to want to share some of these  'AHA' moments  and League stories with other league members and prospects and hopefully share one or two on the National League Webpage.

Thank You for your participation.
Mary Jo Jarrett, LWV Florida Coordinator MLD Program LWVUS

Amendment to Restore Voting Rights for ex-Felons

The League of Women Voters of Florida is partnering with other groups to try to get a constitutional amendment on the 2016 ballot in Florida that would restore the voting rights of most individuals with past felony convictions upon completion of their sentence.  The proposed constitutional amendment would not apply to those convicted of murder or a felony sexual offense.  See article at http://www.saintpetersblog.com/archives/167176 .

DID YOU KNOW?
  • In Florida, over 1.5 million people are permanently denied the right to vote because of a prior felony conviction.
  • Florida is one of only three states (with KY & IA) that has a lifetime ban on voting after a person is convicted of a felony.
The League of Women Voters of Polk County is participating in this effort.  Please contact Jerry Weeks (webmaster@lwvpolk.org or 648-4127) if you wish to be involved.
