President's Message

Welcome to another Florida summer.  I hope everyone is ready to get involved again in League activities.  Remember - this is an election year.

We're starting off with a Welcome and New Members' Orientation which is open to everyone.  Come and meet new friends and refresh your League knowledge!

We will again be hosting a League table at this year's Red, White & Kaboom at Lake Mirror sponsored by our very own Paula & Tom Mims.  Stop by and say Hi or, better yet, volunteer to man the table.

The Primary Election is August 26 this year.  We will be sponsoring Candidate Forums to assist voters in learning about the candidates who are running for election in Polk County.  Please consider volunteering to help out.

Thank you to all board members and other volunteers for making our League such a vibrant organization.

Sue Schultz, President

Charter School Study Results

The results of our Consensus Meeting in January were forwarded to the State League.  Our results were mirrored by most of the other Local Leagues.  The result of the Study are reflected in the State league's statement below.

LWV Florida Publishes Groundbreaking Study on School Choice in Florida

In 2012-13, the League initiated a study to better understand the oversight of public moneys that are allocated to charter schools and other private educational institutions. The study on school choice found that twenty percent of the state's charter schools close because of financial mismanagement or poor academic standards.

For more findings, as well as the League’s recommendations for reform, please click here to read the study in full or visit the League’s page on education issues. You can also read the press release announcing the publication of the study by clicking here.

National League of Women Voters Convention

 June 6-10, 2014 In Dallas
Power:  Our Voices   Power:  Our Votes

It was a great convention with lots of excitement.  Mary Jo Jarrett represented LWV Polk County and was there to participate in MLD - Membership, Leadership Development Activities as program coordinator for LWV Florida.

Most of you are aware that our State President, Deirdre Macnab also was campaigning for the Presidency of the National League.  Although the membership decided to stay with the current leadership, I think the message she shared was heard: grow the grassroots into an organization that reflects the America of today and tomorrow, and encourage a culture of innovation.

Mary Jo also spent time with Shur Fellow Myra Evans from Alabama who was in Lakeland last summer to train new MLD leagues and Coaches. (Photo)
The MLD Program is a league best practices initiative by National and implemented in the State and local leagues.  Florida will be training more local leagues this August in Lakeland.

Mary Jo met lots of Florida members (see picture) and lots of leaguers from all the States.  There was a lot of serious voting pro and con as we worked on program positions. PMP and Budget too were voted on.  One position added to Public Policy Positions was on Human Trafficking.

I have posted information on awards to Florida local leagues on our Facebook page.
Plan to be at the 2016 Convention in Washington DC.
