President's Message

It has been a busy month for the League. Our Hot Topic program this month was well attended. I am delighted at all the interest shown to our Hot Topics.  Members of the public as well as League members attended.  A few new people decided to join us.  We learned a great deal about My Ride from Tom Phillips, Executive Director of Lakeland Mass Transit.  It was interesting and exciting to hear about all the future plans for public transportation in Polk County.
National Voter Registration day was a success.
Judy Walker and the Supervisor of Elections Office were great to work with.  Thanks to all our volunteers, especially Ann Weeks who coordinated the effort with Judy.
Our next event is a
social just to get to know each other better. Please plan on coming to the Red Door, across from the library in Lakeland on October 10, at about 5:00pm.  Enjoy a glass of wine and get to know you League friends better.
In October, we are pleased to have the Polk Superintendent of Schools for our Hot Topic event.  It will be held on October 30, at 11:30am at the Cleveland Heights Golf Course (see above).  Hope you can attend!
I would like to thank
Paula Mims for taking the lead in planning these great programs.  I am also indebted to the entire board for making the job of president so easy.  Thank you Salma Nawlo for taking on the job of Publicity Chair.  I am sure everyone will be hearing more about her in the next few months.

Lisa Rainer and I visited the offices of Reps. McKeel and Combee to discuss Medicaid expansion.  Rep. Albritton has agreed to see us a later date. Hopefully, the League all over the state is helping to convince our representatives that it is good for Florida to expand the federal Medicaid program to those working poor in the state.

Sue Schultz, President

National Voter Registration Day

Working with the Polk Supervisor of Elections office, LWV Polk helped celebrate National Voter Registration Day on September 24.
Voter Services Chair, Judy Walker, conducted a training session for us on September 23.
Then on September 24, our League was represented at the Jackson Library and Lake Morton Library in Lakeland as well as at the Wal-Mart in Winter Haven.
A big "thank you" to the following League members for volunteering:

Joan Verret, Karen Welzel, Pete Wesley, Phyllis Watson, Sue Schultz, Zita Stanley,
John McArthur, Lillian Blessing, Jerry & Ann Weeks

Membership & Leadership Development
Monthly MLD Guidance

Each month, the Membership and Leadership Team  of Polk LWV receives  a guidance Idea from LWV to develop and explore.
The most recent was for us to look for opportunities to collaborate and partner with other organizations with similar goals and vision; while being sensitive to our non-partisan policy.  What other groups and activities are our members a part of and is there an opportunity for potential community outreach?  We would like to hear your ideas.

New Treasurer Announced

The league is sorry to be losing our treasurer, Janet Stevens, to Denver.  Janet and her husband are moving at the end of October.  Her expertise and enthusiasm have been invaluable to us for the past three years.  Not only has she been treasurer but has also headed up the Speakers Bureau.  Our success in getting the word out about the Constitutional amendments last year was in large part due to her hard work.
We have found a volunteer to take over as our new treasurer.  Vanessa Hammill has lived in Polk County since 1976.  She came here to pursue a career in marketing and public relations after graduating from FSU.  She now has a company that sells books in schools as well as other clients.  Vanessa is an experienced bookkeeper who contracts with several businesses including the Bartow Chamber of Commerce.  We are looking forward to working with her on the Board.

Zita Stanley has done a fantastic job collecting petitions for the Land and Legacy project.  The Supreme Court has now approved the language for the Constitutional Amendment.  Several hundred thousand signatures are still needed by Feb. 2014 in order for the amendment to be placed on the ballot.  Our league has collected over 500 signatures so far.

Please let Zita know if you need blank petitions.  She will be glad to get them to you.  Her e-mail is and her phone is 646-4739.
