See what we have been up to this month!
Dear Ben,

In January, more than 800,000 pages and 2,000 titles were added, and more than 45 databases were updated. In addition, the Legal Classics Library surpassed more than 8,000 titles. This database contains works from some of the greatest minds in legal history and includes rare items that are found in only a handful of libraries around the world.

February is a month dedicated to observing African American history and it celebrates the achievements of black Americans while recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. February was specifically chosen because it celebrates the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, both of whom greatly impacted the lives of African Americans. As we take this time to reflect upon our nation's history, we hope all of you have had the chance to take advantage of our free database Slavery in America and the World: History, Culture & Law. Included are all essential legal materials on slavery in the United States and the English-speaking world.

We are excited to announce a new help video series, created by the masterminds at Quimbee. These videos are now available on the HeinOnline YouTube channel! Detailed information is provided below.

A new International Journal of the Jurisprudence of the Family article is now available. Also, we are pleased to inform you that we have recently come to an agreement with the Canadian Bar Association, and are happy to announce the Canadian Bar Review will soon be available in HeinOnline.

Please continue reading for additional details about January content additions and stay tuned for future newsletters where we will be announcing exciting new databases.

Several months ago, Quimbee approached the Hein Company with the idea to create a course for attorneys and students on the use of HeinOnline. After some initial collaboration, Quimbee took the information provided by HeinOnline's support team and help page and ran with it, creating this incredible series of training videos. They have generously granted permission to feature this series on HeinOnline's YouTube channel. In the coming weeks, the videos will also be added to the HeinOnline help page!

The series begins with the basics, such as logging into HeinOnline and creating a MyHein Account. Searching and navigating are also covered in detail, along with tutorials on HeinOnline's various tools and features. The U.S. Congressional Documents database is also covered in detail. Examples and quirky anecdotes are provided to further the viewer's understanding of the inner workings of HeinOnline. In total, the course includes 25 professional videos which will benefit both novice and experienced HeinOnline users.

Additional video topics include:
  • Exploring the welcome page
  • Searching for a citation
  • Searching the HeinOnline catalog
  • Case law, including HeinOnline's partnership with Fastcase

The most-cited author of journal articles in HeinOnline and our go-to example when instructing students how to search by author in the Law Journal Library is Cass Sunstein. His accomplishments extend far beyond HeinOnline: he is the most frequently cited American legal scholar by a wide margin, is a law professor at Harvard Law School, served as Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs under President Barack Obama, clerked under Justice Thurgood Marshall of the United States Supreme Court, and has authored numerous books on a variety of law-related topics.

Search for Sunstein's legal scholarship by entering the
Law Journal Library and clicking the Advanced Search link located beneath the main search bar. In the author/creator field, enter Cass Sunstein.
Click his name from within any search result to view his author profile page.

Sunstein is married to Samantha Power. If that name sounds familiar, it could be because she served as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations from 2013 to 2017. She has also published articles which are available in HeinOnline.

Our monthly update of Session Laws continues as we index to the chapter level or act level in 10-year increments, in reverse chronological order, starting with the states that are ranked highest by access for HeinOnline users. All 50 states have been indexed back to 2005.

The following states have been further indexed this month from 2000-2004.
  • Missouri
  • Arizona
  • Wisconsin

2016 Year in Review

HeinOnline has been steadily adding new databases and new content to existing modules, as well as developing helpful tools designed to improve research experiences for both advanced searchers and new users. Here's a brief review of what HeinOnline accomplished in 2016!

Fast-Check to Avoid Spreading Fake News

In 1938, Orson Welles directed and narrated an episode of The Mercury Theatre on the Air that allegedly resulted in mass panic, as many listeners mistakenly thought the episode was a legitimate news broadcast. Titled "The War of the Worlds," the broadcast was composed of a series of simulated news bulletins about an alien invasion. Nearly 80 years later, fake news is still a real concern in American society.

HeinOnline World Constitutions Illustrated: December Update

With the December release, 62 new documents and 25 new titles have been added to World Constitutions Illustrated.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia with the original birth name of Michael King. His father was also named Michael King and later changed both his own and his son's name after a trip to Germany. The name Martin Luther was chosen in honor of the German religious reformer from the 1500s.

Happy Birthday Alexander Hamilton & Salmon P. Chase

Beginning this year, we will be discussing notable figures in legal history and what information can be found on them in HeinOnline.  Last week marked the birthdays of Alexander Hamilton and Salmon P. Chase, both of whom greatly influenced the national banking system of the United States.

The Extraordinary Cost to Inaugurate a President

Presidential inaugurations have always been expensive, and experts estimate the cost of last week's inauguration of President Donald Trump and the accompanying celebrations to be anywhere between $175 million and $200 million.

Research the Effects of Opioids on Society

Opioid prescriptions and opioid-involved deaths (from both prescription opioids and heroin) quadrupled in the United States between 2000 and 2015.
