Straight from the Horse's Mouth
Second Stride would like to send out this newsletter to thank all of our dedicated volunteers, donors and supporters. We thought you may want to know what your good deeds have been up to!
So far this year, Second Stride has found homes for 60 horses that needed them. We appear to be on track for a record year of adoptions. We have doubled our usual intake numbers this year despite a bad economy, and we are still working hard towards infrastructure development at our main campus. From the 60 horses adopted and 70+ we have brought into the program: 12 were stallions that we castrated and socialized before adoption; 5 were not broke to ride and we had them walk, trot, and cantering with a rider as well as jumping small jumps before they were adopted; 6 were retired broodmares that we conditioned to ride again and got into family homes; 2 were Metro Louisville rescue horses seized from abuse cases; 8 were from homes facing bankruptcy that could no longer care for their horses due to life changing incidents such as accidents; 51 were from race trainers and owners wanting to do the right thing for their horses; and 5 were from homes that had either a retired show horse in need or a badly matched riding pair that needed help and did not want to resort to Craig's List to find them a home.
Second Stride was able to complete the installation of "Rutherford Arena" this year. A fenced-in outdoor riding arena that was made possible largely in part to all of our fund raisers and the kind donation of a private donor. This has lead to an increase in adoptions through the ability to safely ride, train, and show our horses to prospective adopters at our owned Henry County facility. We have also installed a new heated field waterer and have begun some fencing projects there as well.
We are very proud of the work our all volunteer board has done for our program, bringing it to the next level. We give many thanks to: Kathy Stim, Joan Thompson, Jean Amick, Kim Smith, and Tiffany Meredith, and Laura Forbes, as well as our key volunteers such as Tanya Demeritt the new volunteer coordinator, Meritt Holmes and Stephanie Cole our intake coordinators, Dusty Summers our application coordinator, Amy Smith our website help and all the volunteers that work on the countless calls, emails and applications. This is what makes it all happen. Each phone call is a life line for a horse! Please inquire if you too have a talent you can share with Second Stride in our quest.
We also thank all the reporters from the various magazines, online organizations, blogs and TV crews that worked this year to get our message out there! These efforts really do pay off! Many thanks to PBS and Kyle Loughrin
for the wonderful documentary video that is now nominated for a Mid-America regional Emmy! Click here http://vimeo.com/34976951

If you applaud what we are doing, please keep in mind one of our major annual fund raisers is right around the corner. October 1st is our Second Annual golf scramble at Woodhaven golf course in Louisville Kentucky. Please see our website and inquire about getting your team signed up or much appreciated sponsorship opportunities.
