Innovation Group Workshop

We have held two Innovation Group workshops so far in 2011. The first in January was designed to help existing Innovation Groups think through how to turn their ideas into action (using models built from the contents of the Lab teams handbags to do this!)

In February we invited Bruce Davis, Director of Abundance NRG Ltd and a founder of Zopa and Robin Brownsell, who helped start Metro Bank to share their stories of innovation in finance. Watch the video here

2. Internalising Externalities with Pavan Sukhdev: Meeting of the new Lab TEEB Foundation

The new TEEB Foundation hosted by the Finance Innovation Lab, is being established to continue TEEB’s work of driving markets and businesses to take account of their full impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity (often referred to as internalising their externalities).  The Foundation will be a broad-based, multi-stakeholder coalition that will bring together, co-ordinate and join up the many voices in this space.

A second phase is planned that will launch a programme of work to identify 100 externalities and conduct a TEEB study into each, assessing the economic dimension of their ecosystem impact on ecosystems and biodiversity.

Members of this coalition so far include; CDP, Forum for the Future, UNEP, UNCTAD, UNEP Finance Initiative, nef, Slaughter and May, Ernst & Young, Accounting for Sustainability, WWF-UK, Carbon Disclosure Project, APG, Volans, UNPRI, SROI, Mercer, HSBC, World Economic Forum, ICAEW, Earth Capital Partners, UNDP, Aviva Investors, AEAT, Trucost, GRI, SONY, Rio Tinto, Ethos Brazil, FEE China, WBCSD, IASB, GIST India, GLOBE,Menke Corporate Finance & Venture Capital, Natural Value Initiative, DEFRA, Sensonido, UNEP FI, PwC, ADAS, Mishcon de Reya, EnviroMarket, Ethical Markets, ICAEW, IUCN email for more info:

Positive Money

Positive Money is a think tank and campaign  challenging the fact that 97% of money in our economy is created by commercial banks when they make loans. Their "One Good Cut", campaign launched with the slogan "Cut benefits to bankers out, not things we care about" and an animated 3-minute video have reached nearly 20,000 people in the two weeks since launching.

The Finance Lab have recently assisted providing the means for a much-needed office they can work and host volunteers from. Their office on Goswell Road was set up and opened for business on 28th February.
Ben Curtis describes the support the Finance Innovation Lab provided as "a real game-changer" and said "Now we can really take things to the next level. The remarkable skills of all the people who want to take part in this campaign can now be put to use. Thank you to the Lab!"
You can see their office transformed from an empty room into a place to work from here:

WWF-UK Event - World with a Future Begin a new global economy

Deborah 24-25 March 2011, Eden Project

Is our global economic system fit for purpose in our fast-changing world?  With population growth due to rise, this will pose new pressures in the face of climate change and the limitations of our planet's resources.  We need to consider a new and more balanced way of how we view prosperity, the bottom-line and growth.  WWF would like to invite you to their special 50th anniversary international event to explore the building blocks we need to lead the transition to a new global economy.  Keynote speakers also inlcude Lord Adair Turner (Chairman, Financial Services Authority), Tim Jackson (Economist - Sustainable Developement Comission) and Ian Cheshire (CEO, Kingfisher)

Held at the beautiful, Eden Project, the location is first and foremost to remind us of our dependence on and connection to the natural world. RSVP by 25th Feb and receive £100 off your second ticket Visit -  or contact
