June 2020 - The Path, Piano Recital, Dads, Solstice & Latvians

Happy Solstice!
I had a terrific month and a much better outlook than I did in May. Not that the world isn’t still spinning completely out of control. I just had to step off for a minute. I finally was able to wrap up a long term CD design cover art and layout design project for our friend Steve Grimm. The title is THE PATH, by Architect. Steve began with a concept for a meteor image, I added architectural imagery in ‘the path’ of the meteor, Lv (the other contributor) suggested the sunset. Design by committee can be a challenge but I’m happy with how I was able to get all the elements to blend. I also had a really well received meeting for a corporate art installation commission. Hoping the job pans out! On the social front I think that despite large gatherings, no-maskers and civil violence --- I truly believe that most of us are on the right path fighting for a just cause and a better future. We will likely have to endure a prolonged pandemic and economic fall-out due to lack of leadership or overall plan. But as the song says - we shall overcome. And we shall vote. I was inspired to create some art. (see photo below)
I spent the last two weeks prepping students and then the video tracks for my annual student piano recital. This year we were not able to present a live concert so we pre-recorded a video on YouTube and set a premier date for everyone to tune in and leave comments in real time. I also asked them to record their own introductions and mini interviews to share what else they like to do beyond playing music. I think that was my favorite part. I am very proud of them all. It’s a diverse group by skill level, gender, ethnicity and age – from 7 to 74! Their levels range from beginner to Mozart. I requested a special encore song from Noah, a 9 year old student who has been playing with me for 3 years - and reflections on this moment in time by Pastor Pres, our resident senior – and they knocked it out of the park. It was a big success. I shed joyful tears every time I view it. Near the end there is a mini clip of a future piano star - my grand-daughter Sophia! Please watch and check out the additional comments I left about each of the performers – and feel free to add your own. 2020 Piano Recital Part 1 / Part 2. The link is also here I’m currently accepting students from anywhere. 😉
To all the Dads our there, I hope you had a very Happy Father’s Day. My Pop passed 2 ½ years ago. I miss him a lot. His Latvian heritage would have us celebrating Summer Solstice with John’s Day today. They stay awake all night singing. There is also much drinking, jumping over bonfires, and jumping in lakes and running around naked. The girls wear flower crowns in their hair and the men have oak leaf wreaths - and they sing choruses of LIGA (LEE-gwa) over and over. It means ‘Sway’ – which makes sense if you consider how many drinks are being consumed. Wa-hoo! Read more here. Photos w Brusubardis Family.
Hope your summer is happy, too.   ;-)
