Jan 2021 - Inauguration, Insurrection, Poetry, Carter, Nola, Silence

Hello friends!
I’m so happy 2021 has gotten off to a nice quiet start with no drama. Sigh.

Well, at least there was an inauguration and orderly transfer of power. Democracy won. And what a celebration! So many things were right about the day. Especially the beautiful words and music. No balls and gowns, but rather focus on people from all across the land and messages of inclusion and justice. I have faith that Papa Joe and Mama Kamala will take good care of the country and lead us to a better future. It feels like there has been a fresh breeze blowing across the land. But on the fringes the world has gone mad. The reality is that violent white supremacist Trump supporters and other conspiracy theorists tried to overthrow the government incited by Trump himself. His presidency was not stolen. He lost in November and he and his supporters STILL have not accepted it.  They are NOT patriots – only part of Cult Trump. The videos from the January 6th insurrection at the Capital are horrifying. We need to hold all who committed and condoned treasonous and violent acts accountable. The daily arrests are a good start. The impeachment trial with sentencing is next. This must never happen in our country again. The eyes of the world are on us.

That said, things have been very low key in our house. No new art. No motivation. These first few weeks have left me feeling shell-shocked. Truly. But I have been inspired. The inaugural poet Amanda Gorman was incredible. At 22 she is a cum laude graduate of Harvard and author of 3 books! I’m excited that she’ll be reciting a poem at the super bowl. It’s the only reason I will tune in. Fellow artist Ari Rosenthal created a brilliant photo-graphic art portrait of Amanda Gorman. His other recent art includes images of Kamala Harris, Stacey Abrams, Hank Aaron, Michelle Obama, and Tesla. I love his work - check it out. LINK.  Here is a powerful message Ms. Gorman created about abortion bans. LINK

Last week I watched a CNN special – Jimmy Carter Rock n Roll President - TRAILER. It gave me even MORE respect for this man I’ve admired for a long while. His deep belief in social justice and love for all without judgement, his humor and humility, his love of music and talent for poetry were all explored. Interviews with the musicians he befriended, among them Bob Dylan, Greg Allman, Willie Nelson, and Bono – were highly entertaining and enlightening. I highly recommend it.  Just heard that New Orleans cancelled the Mardi Gras parades and that the community came back with a brilliant idea. Yardi-Gras = the houses will be decorated as floats instead!!! I love seeing how smart people have creatively adapted during this ongoing pandemic. Bravo. I think learning to adapt will be the biggest Covid lesson learned.

As I sign off, I leave you with a poetic lyric to contemplate – the last verse to ‘Sounds of Silence’ by Paul Simon…(Full Lyrics)

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sound of silence

Hope you enjoy the snow and relatively mild dead-of-winter weather.
And keep wearing a damn mask.
