VA class, Irish Mural, Fun with friends, Food Fight
This week I finished teaching the fourth session of the veterans photo class. Many familiar faces participated, plus a few news ones. I also made a new art friend, Tim Holte is a volunteer photographer for the group. His work is stunning - check out his Flickr account
. The group discussed tips for taking good photos and toured all over the city. Stops included: The VA grounds, Washington Park, Jones Island, South Shore Park, Three Bridge Park, The Domes, US Bank observatory, and the MAM – two locations on each outing. They are all improving so much, they really captured some amazing images. And we already have an exhibit lined up for August. Stay tuned. This month I signed up several more piano students– one is about to turn 94! She is attempting lessons despite her arthritis. Jane is feisty and fabulous – with red hair, turquoise blue eyes, and sparkly long nails. I hope she stays with it – she is lots of fun! I was happy/sad to sell a favorite painting to one of my piano families. It helps to know it will have a good home and be loved by the Hernandez family. ❤
Mural extension jobs don’t happen that often, but I was lucky enough to work on a doozy this month. The Flaherty’s have this amazing Irish pub themed basement rec room. There was an existing mural of a glorious Irish landscape, but it stopped where the floor tiles ended. The wife always thought it should continue (around the closet doors) so that’s what I was hired to do. It was a little bit of a challenge to match another artists color and style, but I think it really came off well.
I was so happy to spend several beautiful days with my friend Mary Jo from Amsterdam. We brunched with my mom and then feasted some more with our former co-worker Lisa and her sister Nancy. Lisa was a waitress and then manager at the old Harold’s Restaurant. Her sister Nancy is disabled and she has cared for her since their father passed away. Mary Jo was a chef at Harold’s. She and her husband Erik ran a restaurant in Amsterdam called “Eat at Jo’s” for 18 years. They are now operating a B&B, but in their case it’s “Bed & Beer” - so them! We feasted, we supported each other, we laughed, we drank. Then we ate and drank some more. Our biggest laugh was at the expense of women who go to Brazil for butt implants. We figured we could all be donors. Jo and I spent a second day having brunch with my mom again, then watched Tom’s magic show at Holy Apostles Family Festival. We drank beer in the back of the BINGO tent and yelled “BINGO!” even though we didn’t have cards. We ended the evening with cocktails, cinema, chat, cheese & crackers. It was perfect. It was good for my heart and soul to spend time with these ladies and have some laughs. They are all amazing fighters. Mary Jo is fighting depression. Lisa and Nancy are both fighting cancer. My mom, I think, is fighting ‘Widow’s Brain
’ – apparently it’s a thing where you feel like you are walking around in a fog and have trouble remembering. For the most part, she can laugh about it. We’re trying to get good note taking habits to keep things on track. On another serious note, please keep healing thoughts for my niece Kaitlyn who has been battling anorexia. She is getting good help at a residential facility. But it has been so hard for the family to see her suffer. She is a talented artist, super smart, a thrifty fashionista and very loved. It is a difficult disease to understand, because it is not really about food at all. It’s about self esteem and control. Read more here
. All these beautiful inspiring ladies are fighting their battles with such grace and determination. I wish them all continued strength to get through these hard days.
Although we often can’t see it - everyone has challenges in life – big and small. The world would be so much nicer if we all practiced a little more kindness and patience.
I care, do u?
