July 2019 - Milton, VA show, Sabrosa! Art Bar, Videos, Piano Essay, Sunkin Suns

Hello!
It has been an amazing month and a crazy busy art filled one is coming up.

The highlight of July was having my cousin Milton and his wife Jacelyn visit during the 4th of July weekend. We have not seen them in 7 years. What a reunion! We ate and drank and ate and drank and ate and drank again. I’m a big night owl, but it’s been a while since I partied till sunup. Milton is a now Tennessee Puerto Rican – ha ha. He has been serving in the army for 8 years and has achieved the rank of Warrant Officer. He also recently finished a masters degree. We are so proud of him! He attended the VA picnic with me and we got our photo taken with another Burgermeister, Mayor Barrett. We also did the Lakefront Brewery Tour, Blackcat Alley, Hooligans, dinner and feasting with the cousins.

We also attended another epic surprise birthday yard party at the Konkel residence. Dave turned 70 this year. The last one was 10 years ago. This time they hired Hail to the Zoo and The Sam Steffke Trio to perform. The food and company were dynamite! Dave was really surprised. Party Video

The Veterans in Focus class scored really big, thanks to our co-volunteer photographer Kristine Hinrichs. She is not only insanely talented and has taken a photo a day for the past 9 years, but has been on the board of just about everything. She connected us with the right people to have a featured exhibit at the new Northwestern Mutual Life Tower in the lobby gallery space. The exhibit runs from Aug 19 – 30th with a meet & greet reception on Aug 19th from 12-2pm. There will be nearly 40 images by 10 talented vets. Please stop and see it. Here is the slideshow of our escapades. It was created by one of the participants, Dave Ryba. He is a very talented Vietnam Vet  who operates Veterans Media Services.

I have TWO art shows in August. First and most exciting for me is a solo exhibit I’m calling "The Art of Music” at Sabrosa Gallery & Café. The reception will be on Aug 5 from 6-9pm with food and wine samplers, live jazz piano by Scott Currier, drink specials, and a $12 fancy buffet. The show runs all month. If you can’t make it, make sure you get there on a Sunday for a fabulous brunch and classical piano.

The second show is the annual group exhibit at the Art Bar in Riverwest with The Martini Girls. The title of the show is “A Thin Black Line”. The artist reception is Friday August 23rd. I have not yet created the art…but I have a few ideas. How can you resist the suspense of that invitation? What could it be?

The piano recital video is ready for you to enjoy. The students all did an amazing job. I read about some of the benefits and challenges of playing the piano before the recital and decided to gather that info and some additional research to create an essay on the topic. Hope you enjoy it. Feel free to share. Piano Essay

I had a reunion with an old Bay View friend, Toni Spott. She is a marvelous real estate agent and all around fun chick. It’s a long story, but since we had to meet I invited myself over to her house and asked whether coffee or cocktails would be appropriate. Her reply was that she was available after 4pm. Of course, that is WAY too late in the day for coffee. We had a lovely visit on her patio then meandered over to Café Corazon where a group of kids – 19- 21 year olds! – called the ‘Sunkin Suns’ were playing some outstanding old school jazz. It made our day. Look for them frequently on Sundays.

I also had a couple of house painting gigs this month. Spent a day scraping, patching, and painting a peeling ceiling. Also did additional plaster repair and painted a periwinkle bathroom. Whew. I thought my arms were going to fall off at the end of that one. And my legs. Too much time on a ladder with my hands in the air. I am just out of practice. It has NOTHING TO DO WITH GETTING OLD. Now get off my lawn and turn down that music.
