Fun Fact

3 June 2022 was the 30th anniversary of Mabo Day, when Eddie Koiki Mabo and his community won native title for their lands in the Torres Strait. On Mabo Day in 2015, the Sydney Observatory named a star ‘Koiki’ in honour of Eddie Koiki Mabo. The Koiki star sits within the Crux or Southern Cross constellation, which is inside a larger Torres Strait constellation called Tagai, a great warrior in a canoe. In Torres Strait traditions, Tagai has deep significance and is important to nautical navigation. Find the coordinates for Koiki here!
