Happy 15th Anniversary, BSF!

As you probably know from some of our recent correspondence, today Balkan Sunflowers is celebrating an anniversary. On this day, fifteen years ago, the first team of Balkan Sunflowers volunteers entered Kosovo after traveling all night from Albania. BSF was already active for several months before in the refugee camps in Albania and Macedonia but July 15, 1999 marked our first activity in Kosovo.

In the decade and a half that has passed, both Kosovo and BSF have undergone some incredible changes. Infrastructure in Kosovo has greatly improved – that trip our volunteers took from Albania would now only take a few hours thanks to the vastly improved road conditions. Although ethnic tensions still remain, BSF is very proud to have a diverse team of people working on our projects all over Kosovo – such a team would have been hard to imagine in 1999. Finally, Balkan Sunflowers has grown and developed into a well-respected organization that throughout the years has had a positive impact on many aspects of Kosovo society. In 2007, Balkan Sunflowers Kosova became a locally registered NGO that continues to carry out the mission of BSF to this day and will into the future.

We would like to sincerely thank you for your support throughout the years. Whether you volunteered with us, made a financial contribution, donated materials or simply offered words of encouragement for the work we do, we appreciate it all. So today, while we think back over the last 15 years of memories, we hope that you too will take a moment to think about the part that you played in the Balkan Sunflowers story.
