Thank you so much for all of your incredible energy and passion!
It was a joy to be with you earlier this week at our IMIrJ quarterly gathering. As promised, here are some of the notes, resources, and action items from our time together. If you were unable to join us, we missed you! We hope you’ll take the time to look through this email and connect when you’re able.
30-Day Action: Public Comment Turnout
On November 14th, the Trump Administration proposed a new rule that would make life for asylum seekers even more difficult by making them wait longer to apply for a work permit - or in some cases making it impossible to receive a work permit until their asylum cases are approved. Those of you who have accompanied asylum seekers know how much of a hardship this would be if this rule is enacted.
We have 30 days to submit comments, with a deadline of January 13, 2020. Read the one-pager here along with talking points that can be personalized. You can make your comment online or download this postcard to send. Please spread this widely to your congregations and communities.
Flashpoints: Discerning when, if, and how to Engage
In a time when we could respond daily to flashpoints-- threats, tweets, places or events where violence flares up, moments of heightened media attention, and times that demand our oxygen-- we introduced this flashpoint flowchart to help us discern along the way.
Celebrating our ICE out of Courthouses Victory
We shared this campaign timeline as we celebrated the Chief Justice of Oregon’s recent ruling to prohibit ICE activity at courthouses in the state. The timeline is meant to show how a flashpoint turned into a sustained campaign that built capacity, relational power, and “breathed life” back into our communities each step of the way. If you’d like to thank Chief Justice Walters click here to sign our card and share on Facebook.
We looked ahead to 2020…
We began to look at what some of our contextual and connected priorities might be as an IMIrJ movement community in 2020. If you didn’t have a chance to share, what do you want to make sure IMIrJ staff are considering as we plan ahead? Let us know!
Please don’t forget to include IMIrJ in your year-end giving and fill out our 2020 congregational accompaniment forms here.
Finally, in this time where our days are getting shorter and holidays approach, know that we are so thankful for you all. Amidst so much heartbreak, we have found so much heart-strength in this movement community!
Lots of love and good wishes to you this season!
Alaide, Ron, and Sarah
