Stand In Support of Midwives on April 6th!
Please join midwives and their supporters for a hearing in the Business, Professions and Economic Development committee at the State Capitol, Room 3191, Monday April 6, at 1:00 pm, in support of SB 408, the Midwife Assistant Bill. We will be gathering in advance at noon just outside the Capitol Building on the L Street side. RSVP required; please see below for details.

Legislators on this committee will be the first to vote either for or against midwives during this legislative session, so it is especially important for the birth community to make a strong show of support on behalf of midwives and our birthing freedoms.

Babies in arms are welcomed and encouraged. Our primary role at the hearing is to be a physical presence demonstrating huge grassroots support for the bill. No speaking will be necessary! Have a point you want to make sure legislators hear? Please contact us at policy@californiamidwives.org with the details. We are working closely with a legislative strategist to ensure that our speakers are communicating the exact messages legislators need to hear. Please, no speaking at the hearing unless you are a part of our trained legislative team.

If you are a midwife or other childbirth professional, please forward this action alert to your clients in the area and ask them to come to the Capitol on April 6!

We also hope you'll encourage your families to get involved with California Families for Access to Midwifery (CFAM). CFAM is working hard to bring together California consumers in support of midwifery.

SB 408 BACKGROUND:

SB 408 legally authorizes midwife assistants to provide services during a birth. By providing a definition for midwife assistants in state law, this bill will allow them to legally assist licensed midwives in both birth centers and at home births.

SB 408 will also expand access to midwifery care, particularly in rural or underserved areas, by expanding the reach of existing providers. Allowing midwife assistants to assume basic tasks that would, under current law, require another licensed midwife to fulfill has the potential to double the capacity of California’s midwifery care workforce.
YES! I'm planning to attend.
