COLLABORATING WITH THE
OCEAN HEALTH INDEX
Ocean Health Index

In our last newsletter edition we introduced readers to a new collaboration with the Ocean Health Index, providing a general overview of the OHI matrix and how it provides us with a holistic view of how to manage sustainably for future generations. Between now and into late June we will familiarize readers with the OHI framework by outlining details of the matrix and the ten goals and sub-goals—the benefits delivered to humans that are widely recognized for supporting human well-being and sustainable ocean ecosystems. In our second post we highlighted the first of ten goals: FOOD PROVISION. This goal measures the amount of seafood sustainably harvested in a given EEZ or region through any means for use primarily in human consumption or export and thus includes wild-caught commercial fisheries, mariculture, artisanal-scale and recreational fisheries. There are two sub-goals to FOOD PROVISION: Fisheries and Mariculture, which measure the amount of goods sustainably harvested from the sea for human consumption.

What will it take to transform our understanding of the ocean’s myriad contributions and its complex relationship to human health and survival?
In this World Ocean Forum post we share the importance of ocean literacy and ocean education to transform our understanding of the ocean's contributions to human health and survival. We outline the seven principles of Ocean Literacy and some perspectives that can be used to expand those principles into a set of curricular approaches that pertain to science, climate impacts and solutions for our future.

THE OUTLAW OCEAN MUSIC PROJECT
App Store W2O Ocean
All of the music in this project is based on THE OUTLAW OCEAN, a New York Times best-selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. The reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun-running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships, and other topics. The music is an act of solidarity across geography and language, and an attempt at storytelling from written word to music. It is a captivating collection of inspired songs. Take your pick: listen to ambient tracks, classical, electronic or hip hop.
