UN Decade for the Ocean
A NEW YEAR FOR THE OCEAN
A DECADE FOR SOLUTIONS

January 1, 2021 marked the start of the UN Ocean Decade: a pivotal ten years for the future of the world ocean. Over the next ten years, it is imperative that the international community invest in ocean science to find the innovative solutions that will lead us toward a sustainable future. We will support the UN initiative and endorse their work through partnership and participation, and through our programs and initiatives we will continue to work toward increased ocean literacy and change in ocean policy worldwide, linking ideas and offering a knowledgeable aggregate of research, opinion, and storytelling. Join the UN Ocean Decade conversation at oceandecade.org/forum.

World Ocean Journal Volume 7 SOLUTIONS
WORLD OCEAN JOURNAL
World Ocean Journal is a digital magazine on ocean culture and solutions to today’s ocean issues. Each volume includes essays, interviews, art, exhibits, and more, profiling the vital impacts of the ocean on our lives. The focus of our most recent issue is solutions: real ideas and inventions being developed by groups of innovators--from youth teams to scientists worldwide--toward direct action. We are inspired by the transformational change potential contained in the projects highlighted in this issue and hope you will be too. We also include some fascinating visualization tools that help us to interpret ocean and climate events and  transform the way we learn about scientific facts related to the ocean.

In 2020 we had the pleasure of collaborating with investigative journalist Ian Urbina and his The Outlaw Ocean Project team to publish explosive journalism focused on crime at sea. Investigative reporting remains expensive and it is a struggle to cover the costs of these stories, therefore we want to share with readers their new, paid monthly newsletter. For $5 a month, subscribers will receive Ian's reporting; exclusive behind-the-scenes and archival access; alerts and exclusives from The Outlaw Ocean Music Project; and more. It is a place where other journalists, advocates, researchers and policymakers can get more direct access to Ian and his team for the sake of getting exclusive tips, story and source suggestions, or just a chance to discuss these issues. These stories, which are distinctly urgent and uniquely handled by The Outlaw Ocean Project are imperative. We urge you to consider supporting their work.
