Welcome to Government Insider!

The Columbus Chamber is committed to providing superior services and solutions for our members. Government Relations helps you navigate the complexities of government, facilitate connections with elected officials and key stakeholders, and elevates the collective voice of the 11-county Columbus region business community at the local, state and federal levels of government. We recognize that business owners often do not have the time or resources to dedicate to legislative advocacy, but it is imperative that small and mid-sized business has a seat at the table.

Rest assured that your Chamber membership provides you that service. To ensure you are educated and informed on our efforts, we are reintroducing Government Insider, which will provide legislative updates and bill tracking through the lens of our public policy agenda by focusing on three primary topics: Competitive Business Climate, Education and Workforce Development, and Transportation and Infrastructure. We hope you find this service valuable, and encourage you to send feedback on how we can improve it in the future.

Vice President, Government Relations

Legislative Update

House Bill 49, the state operating budget, will be the primary piece of legislation considered by the Ohio General Assembly until its constitutional deadline of passage of June 30. We briefed the budget upon initial introduction here. Hearings in the House continue this week.

Tax reforms that may negatively impact business include an increase to the sales tax rate and expansion of the sales tax base to include elective cosmetic surgery/procedures, landscape design, interior decorating/design, and travel agents/tours. If your business provides any of those services, contact your legislators now to communicate the proposed impact.

We are seeking input on a proposal broadly supported by the business community to centralize collection of the municipal net profits tax through the Ohio Business Gateway. The current process requires businesses that provide goods or services in multiple taxing jurisdictions to file separate returns in each municipality. Contact us now to provide feedback.

The Columbus Chamber submitted proponent testimony this week in support of H.B. 98, legislation sponsors by two of our Franklin County partners in the legislature, Representatives Duffey and Boggs, to require school districts to give employers at least two opportunities per school year to present career and employment information to high school students.

2017 Columbus Chamber Government Day

This half-day event will feature guest speakers Tom Sullivan, Vice President of Small Business Policy for the U.S. Chamber and J.D. Vance, New York Times bestselling author of Hillbilly Elegy, to provide a unique view of policymaking.

We will also host breakout sessions that align with our advocacy efforts on topics including Smart Columbus, how policymaking can impact talent attraction and retention, and an insider look at Ohio’s political climate.
