200+ Attend 2018 December Public Officials Reception

The Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce held its annual December Public Officials Reception last week to recognize the public and private sector leaders that are contributing to our region's continued economic and quality of life improvements. More than 200 people attended the reception, which was held at the Duquesne Club in downtown Pittsburgh.

The progress made in 2018 on issues important to southwestern Pennsylvania’s competitiveness, economic
climate and quality of life would not be possible without the hard work and collaborative spirit of our many committed public and private sector partners.

FIRST STEP Act to Address Skills Gap

Earlier this month, the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce joined the Justice Action Network and a number of other organizations around the country to send the U.S. House and Senate a letter advocating for the passage of the bipartisan FIRST STEP Act. The Senate approved the legislation yesterday and it is expected to be passed by the House tomorrow. The FIRST STEP Act will provide job training, treatment, and rehabilitation programs to those who are incarcerated, as well as tools for business and trade associations to in their job training programs in jails and prisons.

In 2018, the GPCC has advocated for legislation in support of the Allegheny Conference’s economic inclusion agenda, working to eliminate barriers to employment for those who have paid their debts to society. Sensible justice reforms, such as the FIRST STEP Act, are proven pathways to creating a more robust and skilled workforce.

The GPCC’s position on justice reform is based on its desire to provide residents of our region with the job training that leads to meaningful employment, which helps to grow our local economy. The GPCC has supported the driver’s license reform bill, which became law as Act 95 of 2018, and House Bill 1419 or “Clean Slate” legislation, which became law as Act 56 of 2018.
