St. John's Stewardship Committee is excited about this year's approach to stewardship. We have two primary goals. One is to engage each household in the spiritual practice of stewardship. The second is to educate our church about our unique position as the only church in the Diocese which is growing and the need to not only maintain that growth, but to sustain it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stewardship:

How might I best understand the deeper meaning of stewardship?

Stewardship is an expression of gratitude and thankfulness for the blessings of life that come from God.  God is love shared and love returned. In practical terms, this means that we individually and collectively make gifts of financial resources and of time and talents to support the mission and ministry of this parish.

St. John’s Episcopal Awards DVSCP with $10k for Vital Shelter Repairs

Carlisle, PA – August 1, 2019:  Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland & Perry Counties (DVSCP) was chosen to receive a grant from St. John’s Episcopal Church in Carlisle, PA.  This year, the church decided to allocate annual funds to nonprofit organizations serving the need of shelter within the greater Carlisle area.  As the sole provider of emergency shelter for survivors of domestic violence in Cumberland County, DVSCP easily demonstrated direct benefit to the Carlisle community.

The agency submitted a proposal requesting funding for its two-part shelter structural improvement project. Tasks include repairing or replacing 45 shelter windows, as well as repairing and replacing portions of the exterior, which have begun to rot. As part of the selection process, a member of the church’s Outreach Commission toured the facility with the general contractor to get a better understanding of the proposed work.

DVSCP selected Carlisle-based general contractor Cumberland Design and Building, Inc., to complete the project. With a cost estimate at just over $100,000, this grant from St. John’s was the first step in the right direction.  The church’s Outreach Commission believed in the agency and cause enough to also propose it to the parishioners for Sunday Collection, raising an additional $870 towards the project.

“I have worked in the Carlisle nonprofit arena for more than 30 years, and the generosity of this community towards those facing domestic violence continues to amaze me,” commented DVSCP Executive Director Barbara Kohutiak. “St. John’s came on at the very beginning stages of this project and really gave us the confidence to seek the funding necessary to complete these vital repairs. They are a wonderful, caring group of people and we are so grateful for their support.”

The agency is more than halfway to its goal of $100,000.  If you’d like to contribute to the repairs needed to keep the emergency shelter safe and operable for those seeking refuge from violent homes, please visit or call 717-258-4806.
