This Sunday is the Day of Pentecost

One of the ancient traditions in our church is the wearing of red on Pentecost Sunday.  It is customary for the people in the congregation to wear red on the Day of Pentecost as well. We wear red to remind us of the fire of the Spirit.

Check Out Our Preschool Ice Cream Scoopers.

Last weekend during the Ford parade the preschool raised  $650 from donations.  The Preschool will be repeating this event during the Corvette Show.  If you would like to help contact Cindy Mortzfeldt or Suzanne Cornman!
The Vestry Members and Clergy of St. John's are in a conversation about the theology of same sex marriage. In the June Vestry meeting they will discuss and then give counsel regarding supporting same sex marriage at St. John's. If you wish to contribute to this conversation please  contact a vestry member or Father Adam.
Thank you to all of the volunteers and helpers for Vacation Bible School. Last week we had over 40 children ages 4-18 participate.  The amount of help from our parishoners and community members was wonderful.  It was an exciting week of learning about Ancient Greece and sharing Jesus with our community!

SPY Volunteers - Time to Sign Up

Please click on the links below each of the weeks and sign up for specific time slots.  If you need help signing up please contact Sue Baxter from SPY.  She will have the current available time slots if you are unable to use the on line system.

We need help with the following volunteer positions:

BOOK READER- Sign up to share your favorite book, or a book selected for you, with a group of young children and show them just how engaging and fun reading a book can be!  Our volunteer readers are so important!  Reading aloud with children strengthens literacy skills, introduces new vocabulary, and models what fluent, expressive reading sounds like.  Volunteer readers read for 30 minutes with each of the two reading groups for a total of one hour.  Counselors remain with the group and monitor behavior so you can relax and enjoy the time making a difference in the lives of children.

KITCHEN HELPER - Campers at SPY are fed a nutritious and delicious lunch every day while attending camp.  Volunteers are needed to assist our Kitchen Manager with the preparation of the food, serving the campers and cleaning-up after the meal.  Volunteers can sign up for one or all three of the kitchen assignments and can expect to help for about 90 minutes per task.  Two volunteers are needed per kitchen assignment so sign up with a friend!

FOOD BAG PICK-UP- Food bags from Project Share are provided to eligible campers at the end of each week to assure they receive adequate nourishment over the weekend.  A volunteer is needed to pick these bags up and deliver them to the camp for distribution.  Individuals volunteering to pick these bags up should have a vehicle with the capacity to transport as many as 50 bags.

SPY Gift Card Fundraiser

In less than three weeks, Summer Program for Youth, or SPY, will begin its 34th summer camp season here at St. John’s!  SPY is so grateful to St. John’s members who have been committed and dedicated supporters and developed it into the successful and impactful program that the children in our community depend on today! Help SPY prepare for the rapidly approaching camp season by participating in their gift card fundraiser.  Order a gift card from SPY and SPY will use it to purchase camp supplies.  In addition to the gift card contribution, SPY will receive a percentage of the gift card total purchase.  Give once and double your donation!  Gift card order forms can be found on the sign-up table in the cloister.  Completed forms with payment can be mailed or dropped off in the church office.   Thank you for your continued support and for making a difference in the lives of children!

Please contact Jeanna - SPY

Copies of the forms are on the Canterbury Cart

New Fundraising Policy

St. John's Fundraising Policy.  All fundraising events to be conducted within St. John's Church needs to be endorsed by the Rector and approved by the Vestry.  Debbie Kendrick is our fundraising chairperson who can help you complete the fundraising request form and  she will coordinate with the Rector and present to Vestry for approval.  This process will allow us to ensure fundraisers do not conflict with each other and that we support our mission effectively.  Thank you for your cooperation and your continued support to our fundraising efforts.

Your Rector, Father Adam

An Invitation from the Dean of the Cathedral:

This year, as a service to our diocesan community, St Stephen's Cathedral is offering a celebration of long term marital relationships. The date is 16 June at 2 pm. (Yes I know this is fathers' day - sorry -  next year it will be another afternoon!) This service is designed for couples married 25 years and more.  The liturgy will include the renewal of vows, Holy Communion, and a presentation of commemorative certificates for all couples.  A reception with cake and punch will follow.  Bishop Scanlan will preside and will bless the couples at this joy filled service.  We would also like to recognize same sex couples who have been together for 25 years or more and who are now married. Free parking is available in the little garage behind the cathedral on River Street. There will be an attendant to admit participants. Street parking is also free on Sundays in Harrisburg. The street address of St Stephen’s Cathedral is 221 North Front Street, Harrisburg.

Please call the Cathedral office so we know you are coming:
