Carlisle's Ice Art Fest will be February  7 – 9

St. John's participated last year with a sculpture of our church steeple in front of the church.  Over 75 ice sculptures will be available around town.  Food vendors, ice sculpture carvings, glass blowing demonstrations, an ice bar at the Comfort Suites, and carriage rides will be available throughout the weekend.

As a part of Carlisle’s Ice Art Fest 2020, St. John’s will be open for tours of the church focusing on an iconography exhibit, the stained glass windows, and featuring an exhibit of paintings by local Carlisle artist, Barbara Forney, PhD.  The icon exhibit will display 32 traditional Eastern Orthodox and Western themed icons in the Byzantine style.  The icons have been written by members of a group under the tutelage of well know iconographer Jody Cole.  Many members of this group are also members of St. John’s Church.

The church and exhibits will be open:

Friday, February 7, 2020    5-7pm
Saturday, February 8, 2020   10am-6pm
Sunday, February 9, 2020  Noon-2:30pm

If you would be interested in supporting this event, please contact Larry in the office or Barb Cross. We need docents to help in the church and host our guests.

Changes are coming to your IRA

At the end of 2019, Congress passed legislation that includes a variety of changes with retirement accounts, including IRAs.  Outlined below are highlights of the changes in the law which any IRA account owner should be aware of.

  1. The required minimum distribution (RMD) will now increase from 701/2 to 72 for anyone turning 701/2 after December 31, 2019.
  2. Parents can withdraw up to $5,000 from an IRA within a year of a child’s birth or adoption without penalty but must pay income tax on the withdrawal.
  3. Individuals that inherit an IRA from people that die after December 31, 2019, must take the money out of the IRA and pay all taxes due within 10 years with exceptions for spouses, minor children and heirs who are chronically ill or disabled. Some commentators say that this 10 year rule applies to regular and Roth IRA accounts. This could have a profound impact on many heirs of large IRA accounts.
  4. The minimum age for Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) is not changed by the law.  QCDs can still be made to charity without being taxed for anyone 701/2 or older.
St. John’s Estate Planning Committee plans to provide a workshop for its parishioners on  February 22, 2020, times are wine and appetizers will be served from 6 - 6:30 pm, workshop presentation will be 6:30 to 7:30 pm. If you have any questions concerning this topic, feel free to reach out to Alvin Blitz at 717-440-5630 or email dianeblitz@comcast.net.
