Food For Friends Ministry

Did you know that St. John's provides meals for people in our parish? We welcome new volunteers to provide meals for our church community. If you are interested please submit your name here.  These meals will go to people who are recovering from illness, had a birth, or are bereaved.

 I Will Bless You and

You Will Be a Blessing

During the June 18 vestry meeting the vestry unanimously approved supporting St. John's clergy to serve as celebrants in ceremonies from the General Convention approved liturgies in I will Bless You an You Will be a Blessing. The liturgies in this book are the liturgies for blessing same sex couple relationships in The Episcopal Church. Vestry members and clergy have had a full and rich three month discussion and appreciate all the contributions from St. John's parishioners.

Members of the Parish

Earlier this Spring (on February 7th) one of our parishoners, Betty Wuerth, died.  Her son Christian Wuerth forwarded pictures of his mother as well as his cousin and brother from the burial.  There were no local services so Christian wanted to share these images with the congregation.

cross May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Do I stand or kneel after the Sanctus?

I have received calls about a rubric found in the bulletins for Rite II, following the Sanctus.  The question is why two optional prayerful postures are given in this Eucharistic Prayer.  The answer is found on page 362 of the Book of Common Prayer (BCP 1979) that sets our common Episcopalian worship standards.  The italicized rubric offers congregants the option of either posture of prayer and that option has been in place since this version of the BCP 1979 was adopted forty years ago.  The rubric printed in the weekly bulletin is a direct copy of the rubric found on that page of the BCP 1979.

Quote from The Episcopal Dictionary of the Church:

"Recent liturgical reforms, following the ancient practice of the church, encourage the congregation to stand for prayer during most of the times of the service when kneeling has been customary. For example, the rubric in the Rite II eucharistic liturgy directs that the people may "stand or kneel" after the Sanctus (BCP, p. 362). Many believe that standing for the eucharistic prayer emphasizes the eucharist to be a celebration in community rather than an expression of penitence by individuals."

SPY Volunteers - Time to Sign Up

Please click on the links below each of the weeks and sign up for specific time slots.  If you need help signing up please contact Sue Baxter from SPY.  She will have the current available time slots if you are unable to use the on line system.

We need help with the following volunteer positions:

BOOK READER- Sign up to share your favorite book, or a book selected for you, with a group of young children and show them just how engaging and fun reading a book can be!  Our volunteer readers are so important!  Reading aloud with children strengthens literacy skills, introduces new vocabulary, and models what fluent, expressive reading sounds like.  Volunteer readers read for 30 minutes with each of the two reading groups for a total of one hour.  Counselors remain with the group and monitor behavior so you can relax and enjoy the time making a difference in the lives of children.

KITCHEN HELPER - Campers at SPY are fed a nutritious and delicious lunch every day while attending camp.  Volunteers are needed to assist our Kitchen Manager with the preparation of the food, serving the campers and cleaning-up after the meal.  Volunteers can sign up for one or all three of the kitchen assignments and can expect to help for about 90 minutes per task.  Two volunteers are needed per kitchen assignment so sign up with a friend!

FOOD BAG PICK-UP- Food bags from Project Share are provided to eligible campers at the end of each week to assure they receive adequate nourishment over the weekend.  A volunteer is needed to pick these bags up and deliver them to the camp for distribution.  Individuals volunteering to pick these bags up should have a vehicle with the capacity to transport as many as 50 bags.
