Life is Changed Not Ended

Benedictine monks and nuns make vows of conversion to the monastic way of life as is it is lived in the particular community to which they commit their life.  They also make vows of stability and obedience.  In monastic life and, one in could argue, in any vocation, it is a constant progression.  Life is changed, life will change.  Just because one has established in life what they feel God desires for them does not mean one has “arrived”.  Most of all, God desires change, conversion, an obedience – a willingness – for that conversion by listening.  Benedict teaches us to “listen with ear of our hearts”.  The Native American and Poet Laureate of the United States, Joy Harjo, wrote in her poem,Remember:  “Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you.”  Perhaps, this is our ultimate vocation:  God calls us to be motion, growing.
