2016 Holiday
Open House

A great big, warm thank you to everyone who attended our Holiday Open House on Dec 8. We had a lovely time visiting, swapping stories and celebrating together.

In addition to coming together for the season, our new Executive Director used this opportunity to meet and chat with many of you. We are excited to welcome Areni Kelleppan, and we look forward to our future together!

The Gift of Self Care

For many caregivers, the holiday season can mean additional stress. Hosting, managing family conflict and making the season memorable for your care recipient(s) can add to the usual stress of caregiving.

practice self care

With the season upon us, Caregivers Alberta wants to remind you to practice self care using some of these helpful tips:
  • Treat yourself: Whether it's a cup of hot cider or a bar of chocolate, you deserve something sweet!
  • Accept help: With all the additional tasks on your plate, be prepared with a list of ways someone could help; let those interested choose how to contribute.
  • Seek social support: One of the benefits of the holiday season is coming together with loved ones. Use this chance to reach out for emotional support.
  • Rest: With so much going on, it can be difficult to take enough time to recharge. Try to make sleep a priority this year as a gift to yourself, and those around you!
  • Celebrate every victory: Big and small, your efforts make a difference. Take some time to compliment yourself for all that you do.

Programming

Please note that our office will be CLOSED for the holidays from Dec 25 - Jan 2, with the office reopening on January 3.   Looking for groups near you? Use our support finder to view programs and supports in your area.

Save the Date: Volunteers Needed

We still need volunteers for our Casino dates on January 25 and 26, 2017. Specific shifts/roles include Cashier & Chip Runner from 6:30pm - 3:15am and Countroom Supervisor & Countroom Worker from 10:30pm - 3:30am. Please contact the office at office@caregiversalberta.ca or 780.453.5088 for more information.

We would also like to give a shoutout and huge thank you for all those who have committed to help!

2017 COMPASS for the Caregiver

While we often see a slow-down for COMPASS sessions in January, this year many groups are up and running! Find Support in Your Area, or contact 780.453.5088 for more information.

Caregiving can be a stressful, isolating, and overwhelming experience. It can have a negative impact on the caregiver’s physical and mental health. COMPASS helps caregivers balance their own well-being with the challenges of caregiving.

In the News: FCSS 2016 Story Book

In 2014, Caregivers Alberta teamed up with the Stony Plain FCSS in order to begin the Caregivers Support Project. With support from various other community groups, the project went to work producing the first Caregivers Resource Calendar in 2015. The calendar was designed to provide useful information for and awareness about caregivers in Alberta; following great success in 2015, the project also launched a 2016 calendar.

The calendars have grown into a valued resource in the community, and a 2017 calendar is now also available. To celebrate these successes, the FCSS 2016 Story Book gives further details about our growing collaboration, p. 36-37. Our very own Laurie Sutherland is featured, as pictured below!
