Caregivers In the Movies

During the summer maybe you had the chance to watch a movie.  It is very common to see characters and story lines that include caregivers BUT we often don’t recognize or call them “caregivers”.

Think of Katherine’s Hepburn’s academy award winning performance “On Golden Pond” portraying a wife whose husband is losing his memory.  In “The Theory of Everything” it depicts Stephen Hawking and his wife as a young couple dealing with his illness.  In “Silver Linings Playbook” the parents are trying to support their adult child with mental health concerns.  Movies like “Away from Her” (Canadian Film), “Savages”, and “Still Alice” also deal with care giving.

Recently the animated Disney/Pixar film “Coco” and the family movie “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” highlight young caregivers.  It is a great reminder that care giving is everywhere and ageless.

Have your say.....

By participating in research, you have the opportunity to influence the supports that are developed for caregivers.

SPOR - Strategies for Patient Oriented Research
SPOR's defintion of "patient" includes caregivers, family and friends and encourages their involvement in the research process and the integration of research into care.
Check their website for opportunities to take part in research, training or education - much of which is online.

University of Alberta - Enhancing Caregiver Well-Being
Being a caregiver can impact your health, employment and financial well-being. This survey explores the goals caregivers have and the role technology may have in achieving their goals.  For an opportunity to complete the survey:

We were very sad to hear of the passing of our long term member, friend and supporter Jim Frazer.  Our deepest sympathies go out to Elsa Marie and family with the hope they are well supported by all who were touched by his laughter, kindness and generosity.  Jim passed on August 12 and will missed very much.
