Ten years ago today we got off of a plane and began calling Bangkok home. We were young and idealistic, excited and anxious. There were just two of us.

Ha.

As this ten-year-milestone has been drawing near, we have been reflecting together over this past decade. Sunday night we stayed up late reading chronologically through each of the newsletters we have sent since we got started on this crazy adventure. Over and over again, as Iven read portions aloud, we found ourselves almost giggling in unison “If we had only known!” For example, when we first shared about moving into our neighborhood and small studio apartment in February 2008 we wrote: “we don’t know if we will be here for three months or three years.” In actuality, that beloved little triangle-shaped room was home to our family for seven years, and saw us bring home from the hospital our first four babies! How unexpected.

We came here expecting and hoping to “start a ministry for guys involved in prostitution.” That initial call has maintained a consistent place in our hearts, heads and story, but the journey has taken many loops and switchbacks over the years, as the most beautiful hikes often do. We had hoped, but didn’t know we’d be a part of the beginnings of a church here, and while our hearts have always been for the streets (we met each other some 13 years ago at a training to work with homeless youth) we did not “intend” to spend so much time among neighbors in Bangkok who have no roof above their heads.

We’ve been blessed with journeying companions we could not have anticipated at the beginning of this story. Friends, teammates, intercessors, our ECB Life Group, YWAM volunteers, supporters and partners too many to name, neighbors of many shapes and sizes, and not least of which our (now five) children.

We’ve been deeply blessed by YOU. Your encouragement, coming alongside from near or far, and simply being with us has been more important than you know. Thank you. And, if you have a moment, we’d be blessed if you could pause and pray for us right now, maybe asking God for a word or a picture of encouragement to share for renewed strength, or simply thanking Him for who He is proving Himself to be, over and over again. Thank you.

Above all we are learning to see ever more clearly that the destination of this journey, even more than our faithfulness, or fruitfulness, more than the mission or the ministry or the miraculous, is God himself – Father, Son and Spirit.

In the midst of all the turns this road has taken – with the dark valleys and beautiful views – He has been faithful. He has faithfully held and led us at each step (even at times dragged us kicking and screaming, like one of our toddlers!), and has consistently shown Himself to be a gentle and loving Father to our family, and to our neighbors.

Please join us in thanking Him for being faithful to who He is, because even when we are faithless, he will not deny his loving faithfulness to us. Please join us in worship as we follow in the footsteps of the Psalmist (136):

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good,
His steadfast love endures forever.

Give thanks to the God of gods,
His steadfast love endures forever.

Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him alone who does great wonders,
His steadfast love endures forever.”

Who by his understanding laid the foundations of Krungthep (Bangkok),
His steadfast love endures forever.

And called our family to serve Him in this city,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him who has met our every need,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him who makes His love known in our lives and on our streets,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him who remembers and holds every prayer we lift up,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him who sees, and offers comfort to each one of us in pain of spirit and pain of body,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him who knows the name of every young man working the bars or waiting on the streets of Phra Nakorn,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him who knows the heartaches and joys of each woman who has ever worked this neighborhood,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him who lavishes attentive love and care upon those who know not their own worth,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him who lovingly receives the praise songs of his deaf and tone-deaf children,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him who encourages the downtrodden and lifts up those who are presently addicted,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him who is a father to the fatherless,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him who remembers the names of Wa, and App, and Sunshine, Tuk and Dam, and Porsche.
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him who makes fishers of men out of ourselves and our neighbors,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him who scorned the shame of the cross for the joy set before Him,
His steadfast loves endures forever.

To Him who will receive the reward for His suffering,
His steadfast love endures forever.

To Him alone who knows the end of the story,
His steadfast love endures forever.

All grace and peace and love and thanksgiving,
Iven, Kashmira, Izayla, Elian, Kyin, Rinnan & Tirzah
