Farewell Sr. Dorothy!
It is with sadness that we convey the news that Sr. Dorothy Beck, a member of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, entered into her eternal reward on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at Holy Redeemer Hospital. While she was hospitalized, she was visited daily by Handmaid sisters, the Beck family, and close friends. The day before her passing she can be seen with her Handmaid cross faithfully worn around her neck, her rosary gently wrapped in her right hand, her left hand tenderly held the hands of her loved ones, and her mouth uttered softly: “Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in You. I trust in the mercy of God”. The sisters of her community were by her side and accompanied her body until the undertaker came.
Her life was honored at a funeral liturgy held at St. Raphaela Center.

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice (Phil 4;4)
It is a great joy for me to serve in the retreat ministry here at Saint Raphaela Center. I am truly grateful for your kind words in welcoming and embracing me in this new role. I give thanks to God for you, especially during my time in adoration. Let us together rejoice in the Risen Lord!
Spring is finally here! We continue to experience the joy of Easter as nature helps us see the newness of life that is blossoming and springing forth from what seemed to be dead. Not only is there new beginning around us but there is also a spiritual spring that is happening within each one of us as we experience the Risen Lord calling us by name, perhaps in a deeper way or on a new journey. For me it is a new ministry, and for Sr. Jessica it is a new journey both physically and spiritually. On the 26th of April, we said farewell to Sr. Jessica as she traveled to Madrid, Spain, to join 12 other Handmaids from around the world (Africa, Argentina, India, Italy, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Viet Nam). From there they will journey to Rome, where they will spend the next six months deepening their calls to be Handmaids and preparing for their lifetime commitment to the following of Jesus as religious sisters. Please rejoice with us Handmaids and let us keep these sisters in our prayers.
It is very fitting that Sr. Jessica and all these sisters are pictured here in the garden of the childhood home of Saint Raphaela and her sister Dolores in Pedro Abad, Spain. The 18th of May is the feast of St. Raphaela. Her greatest desire was to make “Christ known and loved by all”, and this too is the desire of the Center: to offer “a place and time for God” for all who are seeking to respond to that deep yearning of the human heart for God. A special “Thank You” to all of you who have lovingly supported us in this mission by generously sharing your gifts, talents and time. Please know that the mass intentions on the Feast of St. Raphaela will be for all our volunteers and benefactors. Please rejoice with us and join us on this Feast Day for Eucharist at 11:30am, followed by lunch. Please call the Center to RSVP.
We have one more exciting piece of news to share, so that you can rejoice with us. On the 11th of April we have acquired a new property – the home on the left as you exit our property. We are very excited for the many possibilities that this new home will offer us. Let us rejoice with grateful hearts for the opportunity to serve God and God’s people in this ministry.
As for me I rejoice in my new role at St. Raphaela Center and look forward to meeting all of you again or for the first time.
Let us joyfully live our vocation and be the saint “next door” (Pope Francis’ Gaudete et Exsultate)!
With grateful and joyful heart,
Sr. Uyen-Chi, acj
