Media Independence and Countering Violent Extremism- Joint Session by BBCMA and GFMD @ UNESCO World Press Freedom Day

This joint session by BBC Media Action and GFMD will discuss the ramifications of enlisting media organisations in the development of counter-narratives to violent extremism, including the risk of compromising their independence, credibility, and influence by being complicit in such a role. It will also see the launch of two new UNESCO publications “Terrorism and the Media: A Handbook for Journalists” and “Social Media and the Radicalization of Youth in the Digital Age”. Panel participants include GFMD steering committee members Diana Senghor, PANOS Institute (West Africa), Kateryna Myasnikova, Independent Association of Broadcasters (Ukraine), GFMD Chairman Ricardo Corredor, FNPI (Colombia) as well as Jake Lucci from Google, with James Deane from BBC Media Action as Moderator.

UNESCO World Press Freedom Day- Global Celebrations

Every year the World Press Freedom Day celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom, to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence, and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession. Every year, apart from the international conference, the day is marked through national celebrations in countries across the world.

GFMD Webinar Presenting Article 19 and CIMA Report "Media Development in the Digital Age: Five Ways to Engage in Internet Governance

In a new effort to encourage, support and coordinate research efforts related to the field of media development GFMD will be hosting two webinars per month during the course of 2017. Focus will be on presenting work of GFMD members, with the express aim of sharing the research, project experiences, best practices, and new solutions with media professionals and media development practitioners worldwide

Applications Open for ECPMF’s Journalist-in-Residence Programme

The ECPMF (European Centre for Press and Media Freedom) Journalists-in-Residence Programme offers media workers under threat a safe environment to rest, recover, and continue their journalistic work. “Media workers staying with us have been fighting for years to be able to work independently and without restrictions. They are long-experienced colleagues who often face massive threats in their home countries”, says Christian Schult, JiR programme coordinator at the ECPMF. The deadline to apply is 12 May 2017.

Call for Nominations: Free Press Awards 2017

The Free Press Awards will be conferred at Free Press Live on 2 November 2017 and will recognise exceptional work in the categories Newcomer of the Year and Most Resilient Journalist. The deadline for entries is 1 August 2017. Anyone in the broader field of journalism, in any country around the world can be nominated.

Media Tools against Hate Speech Workshop by Media Diversity Institute in London from 22-26 May 2017

The Media Diversity Institute (MDI) is inviting applications for a workshop it is organising for civil society organisations involved in countering hate speech. The event will be held in London between 22-26 May 2017. CSO activists from EU countries interested in participating at the workshop should contact for further information on how to apply. All costs of participation will be covered by the organisers.

Trump, Brexit and the Future of Media Development and Digital Rights Advocacy: How Fake News, Populism, and Mainstream Media are Shaping Today’s World

GFMD co-hosted a talk at Access Now RightsCon in Brussels on 30 March 2017. The session was led by Susan Abbott of Cross-Pollinate Consulting and the panel included Tara Susman-Peña from IREX, Friedrich Lindenberg from OCCRP, Andrew Stroehlein from Human Rights Watch, journalist Rohan Jayasekera, Sacha Meuter of the Fondation Hirondelle, Kate Coyer, Berkman Klein Fellow and Executive Director of CEU's Center for Media and Communications, journalist Eric S. Johnson and Mira Milosevic, GFMD’s Executive Director.

Call for Entries for PLURAL+ Youth Festival on Migration

The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) invite you to submit original and creative videos focusing on the PLURAL+ theme of migration, celebrating diversity and social inclusion. Deadline for submission is 4 June 2017 though early submissions are encouraged. Participants should be under the age of 25. Download the entry form and see the instructions on the PLURAL+ website.
