GFMD Promotes Free, Independent and Pluralistic Media

Global Forum For Media Development

Welcome To The 11th Issue Of The GFMD Insider

With this issue the GFMD Insider comes to you in a new format. It is posted on its own web-site:, which will allow you to post comments more easily, download the articles and browse the archives. All new issues of the Insider will be published on this site and we hope you will add your ideas and comments.

As many of you know already, the main news is that we will now hold the GFMD World Conference in partnership with Highway Africa on September 9-11 in Grahamstown, South Africa. We are working hard with our partners at Highway Africa to present you with an exciting programme. We have invited the best-selling author and economist Paul Collier to address the conference on the role of media development in fighting poverty as well as high-level representatives from Google to discuss internet freedom.
Many donors will attend the event, including the Omidyar Foundation, the National Endowment for Democracy, the Aga Khan Foundation and others.
There will be some 400 media developments practitioners, journalists, editors, media executives and donors from Africa and around the world and we hope you will join us in South Africa.

This issue of the Insider addresses many of the issues we will be discussing at the GFMD World Conference. Klara Debeljak from InterMedia UK presents an important study on how to gain support for international development. Jenny Holm from Internews Network presents a new toolkit for journalists reporting on human rights. Michelle Foster explains why good business strategies matter to media development and the Cool New Tools give advice on how to start a strong journalism association. Our regular contributors James, Deane, Susan Philiber, Amy Webb and Aidan White provide food for thought on advocacy for media development, tracking results of media programmes and ideas to promote good governance inside media.
