Egypt blocks access to 21 news websites

Egypt has banned at least 21 news websites on Wednesday, 14 May,  including the main website of Qatar-based Al Jazeera television, The Huffington Post, and prominent local independent news site Mada Masr for "supporting terrorism" or reporting "false news. Committee to Protect Journalists and other GFMD members have called on Egyptian authorities to immediately stop blocking access to news websites.

Pakistan Press Foundation wins prestigious Astor Award 

The Commonwealth Press Union Media Trust (CPU) has presented the annual Astor Award to GFMD member, the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF). The Astor Award is presented to an individual or organisation that has made an outstanding contribution to the Commonwealth newspaper industry and in particular fighting for press and media freedom.

Revelations in the Guardian newspaper about Faceboook's internal rulebook have initiated a much needed global debate about the lack of transparency and accountability of social media companies. GFMD members, including Ethical Journalism Network's Aidan White, call for fair and transparent reporting and adherence to ethical standards as a way to building trust.

Training women journalists for conflict

Many of the threats to journalists in conflict zones are not gender specific, but female reporters confront additional risks at a higher rate than men. These include threats such as sexual harassment, assault and rape, writes Colette Davidson for WAN-IFRA. A journalist herself, she speaks with several veteran journalists and trainers on the need to prepare and equip reporters to face the threats they might encounter on the field.
