GFMD welcomes 1 new member


The Finnish Foundation for Media, (known by its Finnish acronym VIKES) is a foundation for development cooperation, intended to promote freedom of expression and the pluralism of media as a basis for democracy and social development.
VIKES was established on the initiative of the Union of Journalists in Finland, and brings together the whole Finnish journalistic profession.

BBC Media Action:
Public service media in divided societies: Relic or renaissance?

This briefing focuses on the media of countries that are divided, undergoing crisis or conflict, or where governance is weak. It argues that the role of public service media in such societies – sometimes called fragile states – is increasingly relevant and sometimes critical to underpinning political and social development for the 21st century.

It has issued a new study on “The citizen journalist and freedom of expression in Palestine- Gaza as a model”. The study sheds the light on the contribution of the citizen journalism in enhancing freedom of expression, and its role in raising different social issues.

SYRIA MEDIA SAFETY: PROVIDING A RESOURCE IN A HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

A group of international media watchdogs launched a one-stop-shop for journalists working in war-ravaged Syria.  The toolkit offers advice on physical safety, digital security, and emergency assistance for those fleeing their attackers.
For four years running, Syria has been the deadliest spot on earth for journalists.  Eighty-five have been killed in the line of duty since the conflict ignited in March 2011.  More than 90 have been abducted, the highest number the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has recorded in a war zone.

Bahrain: States must sign UN Statement in support of Human Rights

ARTICLE 19, alongside other NGOs, today voiced support for the UN joint-statement on human rights in Bahrain, delivered by Switzerland at the 30th session of the UN Human Rights Council, was co-signed by 33 countries, including 19 EU states and the United States.
