GFMD Events in 2016

2016 looks like GFMD’s most active year since the establishment of the organisation. On January 27-29, GFMD facilitated the meeting of the joint Syria Coordination Committee in Paris and in Brussels, to prepare the next general Syria Coordination meeting end of May and help representatives of Syrian independent media reach out to Brussels-based EU institutions, international NGOs and journalists.

The Media diversity Institute  works internationally to encourage and facilitate responsible media coverage of diversity. It aims to prevent the media from intentionally or unintentionally spreading prejudice, intolerance and hatred which can lead to social tensions, disputes and violent conflict.

During the last Syria Coordination Meeting in Istanbul in September 2015, representatives of independent Syrian media institutions chose eight of their colleagues to form a coordination committee tasked with setting the agenda of the next Coordination Meeting.

Online Media Freedom Resource Center (RC) 

Recent developments in Poland and Turkey epitomise how seriously the EU is faced with a growing number of media freedom violations both in its member states and among candidate countries, whit journalists and media professionals targeted on a daily basis with threats, censorship and intimidations limiting the circulation of independent information.
While concerns over the issue are increasing at European level, Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso (OBC) and the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) have launched www.rcmediafreedom.eu an online platform that enables journalists, policy-makers, scholars, and citizens to access up-to-date materials on media freedom and pluralism in Europe

Studio Kalangou, une nouvelle offre radiophonique pour tous les Nigériens, démarre ses programmes ce lundi. Il propose un programme radiophonique quotidien de deux heures. Au rendez-vous, des journaux d’information en cinq langues (français, haoussa, zarma, tamashek et peulh), des programmes d’éducation civique, des magazines sur la vie quotidienne des Nigériennes et des Nigériens et une grande émission de débat et de dialogue.

International Media Support:
Yemen – breaking the silence

From 6 January, Almashahid.net, a new website aims to provide independent news and human interest stories from inside war-torn Yemen to the information-starved Yemeni population. Almashahid.net is based on the principle of public journalism, meaning journalism practiced by “non-journalists”. This means that 15 so-called correspondents will be providing information and visual documentation from inside Yemen to the website through the editorial team.
