GFMD's New Steering Committee to be Elected at 2016 Jakarta World Forum for Media Development

GFMD will elect its new Steering Committee at the 2016 World Forum for Media Development in Jakarta (September 20-22, 2016). Members from GFMD's seven caucuses (Europe, North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Eurasia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East and North Africa and Asia) will choose their representatives and define together the strategic directions for the network in the coming three years. Registration for GFMD members is now open.

In light of the UK’s exit from the European Union, GFMD interviewed James Deane, Director of Policy and Learning, BBC Media Action and Daniel Bruce, CEO, Internews Europe regarding their opinion on what this historic decision means for the future of media development in terms of programmes, policy, and funding.

GFMD Workshop on “Mediadev, CVE & Counter-Propaganda: Where is the problem?”

With the rise in violent extremism many in the media development community and national and international civil society find that they are increasingly expected by some donors and authorities to show how their work strengthens efforts towards countering violent extremism and propaganda. The GFMD Workshop aimed at proving a platform for a relevant and timely discussion on how to maintain the integrity of free and independent media and assuring access to information in these challenging times. The workshop concluded with three overarching areas of recommendations for better advocacy, evidence and data sharing, and safety principles.

IMS  Annual report 2015-2016: Sustaining Independent Media in times of conflict

We are pleased to share International Media Support’s Annual Report 2015-2016 which presents the results of their support to independent media and access to information in countries affected by armed conflict, authoritarian regimes and political transition.

MedMedia-GFMD Conference Considers New Mechanisms for Improving the Coordination of Media Development Efforts in the Middle East

At a conference organised by the EU-funded MedMedia project and the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD), representatives from 30 leading agencies highlighted the need for a more joined-up strategy in supporting local media actors as well as better mechanisms for assessing priorities and devising appropriate responses. The event, which was held in Brussels on June 27-28, was aimed at considering new approaches for regional coordination and at showcasing an online mapping tool created by MedMedia which will provide an overview of ongoing media development projects in the partner countries.
