GFMD SUBMITS JOINT     STATEMENT TO DONOR MEETING ON MEDIA DEVELOPMENT


GFMD presented a joint statement at the "Confronting the Crisis in Independent Media: Strategic Approaches for International Donors" meeting of donors, on 31 January and 1 February 2019, in Paris. The statement was based on a two-month study conducted by GFMD titled "Recipient Perceptions of Media Development Assistance: A GFMD Study," and on the input from members and the Steering Committee.

NAVIGATING THE NEWS COVERAGE OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND AGRICULTURE AROUND THE WORLD

GFMD is co-hosting a series of webinars on climate change and agriculture this month. Experts from the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security, and Earth Journalism Network will discuss tools journalists can use to better convey how climate change and agriculture are intricately linked.

GFMD TO CO-HOST AN NGO CSW MEDIA DEVELOPMENT PANEL 

On 21 March 2019, GFMD will co-host a media development panel as part of NGO CSW63. Organised by our Women in Media Working Group, it will explore how women are harnessing online spaces to challenge the stereotyping and misrepresentation that are present in traditional media. The panel will discuss the various successes and challenges they face in their efforts to develop an online presence.

MDIF ANNOUNCED THE LAUNCH OF THE FIRST PRIVATE EQUITY IMPACT FUND FOR INDEPENDENT MEDIA


Media Development Investment Fund has raised nearly $13 million for the Emerging Media Opportunity Fund I to back digital news and information outfits in Latin America, Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa where press freedom is threatened and news media organisations face restrictive business conditions.

EJN'S ONLINE COURSE ADDRESSES COPYRIGHT CHALLENGES IN AFRICA


Copyright issues persist throughout Africa, and media professionals are fighting a battle of protecting and monetizing their work. In response, Ethical Journalism Network has set up a course titled: Copyright – how to protect it, how not to breach it, which is free and is led by Chris Elliott, CEO and director of EJN, with input from other copyright experts.

MEASURING MEDIA SUSTAINABILITY IN EUROPE AND EURASIA


Measuring complex information systems can help people diagnose root causes to local problems and identify actions to address them. IREX is piloting a new tool – the Vibrant Information Barometer, or VIBE – to build on the Media Sustainability Index in order to continue providing analyses and insights to Europe and Eurasia’s media .

NEW PROGRAM TO COMBAT GENDER DIVERSITY ISSUES IN NEWS REPORTING

On 23 January at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, United for News – a global multi-stakeholder coalition of media, private industry, and NGOs, which includes GFMD – announced pilot programs in Canada, Iraq, and Ukraine to address the deficit of women in news reporting. United for News is led by the international non-profit, Internews, in collaboration with the WEF.
