This issue is dedicated to updating you with important developments regarding our Internet governance and policy work. This includes the launch of a new, GFMD-led Dynamic Coalition (DC) within the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) focusing on the sustainability of journalism and news media, as well as our meeting with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern as part of a group of civil society representatives that convened this week in Paris to discuss the Christchurch Call. GFMD Launches New Coalition Focusing on the Sustainability of Journalism and News Media

In early April, we received confirmation from the IGF Secretariat that our new Dynamic Coalition focusing on the sustainability of journalism and news media (DC-Sustainability) was approved. This positive development means that there is now a central hub where our community can collaborate together within the IGF and wider Internet governance ecosystem. GFMD and Civil Society Representatives Meet with PM Ardern in Response to the Christchurch Call

In response to the 15 March 2019 terror attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand, PM Ardern is advocating for the Christchurch Call to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online along with President Macron at the G7 meetings this week in Paris. Civil society advocates, concerned by the bilateral nature of the call's engagement solely with governments and tech companies, released a joint statement that GFMD both contributed to and endorsed. We also had the opportunity to meet with PM Ardern on 14 May to voice concerns and offer perspective from our community.

GFMD @ RightsCon Tunis: Addressing media sustainability   with Free Press

As part of our continued advocacy on media sustainability, digital markets, and business models, GFMD is co-organising a workshop at RightsCon Tunis with the U.S.-based advocacy organisation Free Press. The session will address the wider impact of the digital economy on democratic societies. We also plan to host an informal meeting of our new Dynamic Coalition, so please indicate your availability here

Join us in The Netherlands for EuroDIG 2019

GFMD and WAN-IFRA are co-organising various workshops related to journalism and news media in the digital age on day 2 of the European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG) – Europe's regional IGF initiative held annually. Taking place this year in The Hague from 19-20 June, we will be participating in Workshop 8 (journalism, disinformation, and elections), Workshop 12 (news literacy), and Plenary 7 (regulating "online harms").

Expanding Our Engagement With the International Declaration on Information and Democracy

GFMD has been invited to broaden our engagement with the International Declaration on Information and Democracy – an initiative launched last year by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). We have been invited to participate in a working session to advise RSF on their Forum on Information and Democracy, which will be held in Geneva on 5 June 2019.

RDR launches their 2019 Corporate Accountability Index

Today, Ranking Digital Rights (RDR) launched their 2019 Corporate Accountability Index, which found that most companies have taken steps to improve, but they have a long way to go before the Internet supports and sustains human rights for everyone. GFMD participated in consultations with RDR, and offered our feedback about new indicators used in this year's report.
