The Importance Of Free, Independent And Pluralistic Media To Human And Economic Development

Below is a speech delivered by Bettina Peters, Director, Global Forum for Media Development :

We are all rightly very excited by the developments here in Myanmar and by the enormous opportunities offered to building a media environment that enables open and democratic debate and building a cohesive and open society in Myanmar.In the development discourse, over the last twenty years it has become recognised that free, independent and pluralistic media play a crucial role in human and economic development.

It is thus very fitting that the debate on Myanmar’s transition includes at its start a debate about its media development. And this conference offers us the unique opportunity to do this.
