Funder's Confidential panel in International Journalism Festival in Perugia, Italy in early April attempted to expose the often-mysterious process that is how funders and foundations choose which projects they are willing to support. Funders are looking for diverse teams with bold ideas, who are passionate about the subject being addressed, are solution oriented, and come with a network behind them.

New documentary film: "COURAGE - Journalism is not a crime"

Across the world, journalists are being killed, harassed and imprisoned for carrying out critical and investigative journalism. Still, many continue their reporting. This is the story of three such journalists. Lawi Weng from the Irrawaddy in Myanmar, Erdem Gül from Cumhuriyet in Turkey and Emin Huseynov from Azerbaijan all went to prison for doing their job. All are devoted to journalism, but under immense pressure by repressive governments because they seek to reveal what those in power wish to hide.

Media development funding update from CIMA

Tracking donor efforts to support media development is fundamental to assessing whether enough resources are being directed at these efforts, and whether those resources are being channeled to the areas of most pressing need. From 2015 to 2016, overall levels of donor support for global media development remained largely unchanged. This is according to the latest data published by CIMA as part of the Media Development Donor Profiles initiative.

MedMedia conference marks the end of the programme

The EU-funded MedMedia programme held its closing conference in Tunisia on 8th and 9th May. The conference examined the programme’s key achievements, including the Initiative to establish a Special Mechanism for Media Freedom in the Arab World and the signature of its regional Declaration in six Arab states, an initiative to strengthen the participation of youth in broadcasting, and various other key actions aiming to strengthen education, gender equality and counter hate speech in the media.
