"Without horizontal there is no vertical"
20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
1 John 4:20-21
We don’t like to think about this often, but our relationship with God is greatly affected by our relationship with others. God uses some pretty strong language to communicate this as well.
Consider this though… As a believer God saved you right? With all your flaws, all the secret (maybe even terrible) things you’ve done, he redeemed you. Why? Because that’s His mission! A people from every tribe tongue and race worshiping together at the end.
When we forget this “mission” it becomes easy to be selfish with “our” God and be completely ok with disliking others to the point to hate, sometimes even because of how they interpret scripture. However, this is not possible if we claim to love God. Sure there will always be people that annoy us, or make us upset but to harbor animosity against one of the very children is trying to save is NOT ok.
God invited each of us into a pre-existing family and his only command or requirement of us is that we help it grow by loving others. How can we say we love God when we can’t stand for the things He stands for?
Search your heart, remember that you’re part of a growing family and be the big brother/sister God wants you to be…
